Lowering of Flag Ceremony Every Evening At Dusk & history of the Base

It's well worth taking the time to see the Flag Lowering Ceremony!

THE BUILDING OF LEMOORE NAS

In 1954, the Navy searched the Northern California-Nevada area for land to build a master jet air station - one with congestion free air space.

Lemoore was chosen because of its central location, good weather for flying, relatively inexpensive land and the nearby accommodations. Construction started in 1958. With base housing, administration facilities and the flight training areas in operation, the air station was commissioned on July 8, 1961.

Located in the San Joaquin Valley approximately 40 miles south of Fresno, CA, nearly 5,000 military and 1,000 civilian employees work onboard, with an average payroll of $120 million per year.

NAS Lemoore's primary mission is to support fleet carrier squadrons. The heart of this mission is the operations area. Designed to support more than twenty fleet squadrons, it serves as a master training center for carrier-based strike fighter squadrons of the United States Pacific Fleet.

It looks like they help each other out with rides to the airport. Our son has given many people rides for just the gas money. It's expensive to leave a car at the airport so when he came home in August he found a ride with a friend. If he asks around and is willing to pay for gas (and maybe a little more) he will probably find a ride. Also, remind your son that he shouldn't have to pay to check his bags. That's a military perk on most airlines. Enjoy your Christmas together!

Hi Everyone!  I am sure everyone is just as excited as me to be getting our Sailors back!  I have a couple questions and am hoping that some of you Mom's have been to Lemoore before...we would like to purchase my son's plane tix home (his leave was approved!) but am concerned how he would get himself to the Fresno airport.  Do taxi's come in on base?  Can they come in at anytime (he would have to be at airport like 4:30am)?

Marian, I am heading out to Lemoore in 10 days, is there something you want me to look at?  My son lives off base in an apartment, apparently 10 minutes away (so we will see)!!  We are heading to San Francisco for the weekend and plan on going to Caramel, Pebble Beach and who knows where.  While my son is working my husband and I will be exploring as my son doesn't go out and explore - he goes from point A to point B!!  Although he knows where the sports bars are!! LOL  Anyways, I will check it out and let you know what I find out.  I will ask around where it is the safest, closest to everything, etc for you.

Jill, your post made me feel a whole lot better. It would have been a lot worse if he decided to tell me when he got home. Giving me time to get in touch with u moms and think about it and how to support his decision is going to make our time home together much happier. I will contact AAA for a trip tic and just research everything I can on the Internet and if he asks or any help, I will be ready and willing to help him out. Thank u very much for 2 cents LOL!!!!

While my daughter was in Pensacola for A school she bought a truck (the one she always wanted), so when it was time to go to Lemoore for C school she ended up driving by herself all the way across the country.  Granted, my daughter was 21, pretty mature and responsible... but that didn't take away the worry that I had for a girl to be driving all the way across the country and staying in hotels by herself!  But they will do what they want to do, so I had to be supportive.  I helped her plan out her route, helped her book hotel rooms (one's that looked safe to me) and she kept in contact during the trip.  She also planned her driving times so not to be driving late into the night and stopping in places that didn't seem safe.  She made it safely, but not without lots of worry and prayer from mom :-)  And it is true, they will pay.. and most of them end up getting more than they need so they actually make money on the trip.  It's a tough one, but by supporting her and volunteering to help her with the plans it made it a lot easier than causing a lot of friction by arguing with her about it.  Just my two cents :-)

Thank you Sia, I will just have to wait and see when he comes home next week, if this is still his  plan.  It almost seems like they are encouraging these sailors to do it.  I hate not having my protective Mom powers over my sailor anymore!

Thank you so much.  We'll see when he gets home what he has for a plan.  I texted him yesterday about my concerns because I am basically losing sleep over this.  He tells me "don't worry, they are going to pay for me to drive."  Are you serious....I would pay him to NOT drive.  I don't think he gets what my issues are.  He is very much like I was when I was his age.  If I had this opportunity, I would certainly want to do the same thing and do it alone.  I suppose this will be my new group! Thank you so much towermom.  I really appreciate your comments and prayers!!

My son has been in Lemoore for over a year now.  He will definitely want a car.  My son just moved out of the barracks and into an apartment off base but only 10 minutes away.  There really isn't much to do in Lemoore, so they often go to San Diego and Fresno.  I would be nervous having him drive by himself too, but he is 21 and now a Sailor (that is what my husband keeps telling me about my son (he is 23) and I still worry about him.  He is an Air Traffic Controller there.  Tell your son safe travels.   I will keep him (and you MassMom) in my thoughts and prayers for his safe travel and journey.

Hi, My son informed me about a week ago that he will be going to Lemoore.  I'm not sure what Squadron yet, but I know it's for the USS Ronald Reagan. I'm reading along and it seems that it's pretty popular to drive your car to the base.  We live in Massachusetts and he has already said that he will be taking his car and he is apparantly going alone.  I suggested he fly down and just buy a car there. His Dad seems to think this is just a wonderful adventure for him and is all for it.  Me...not so much.  He is 21 and has never driven more than 2-3 hours at a time.  I wouldn't mind going with him, but I don't think he would go for that.
