Lowering of Flag Ceremony Every Evening At Dusk & history of the Base

It's well worth taking the time to see the Flag Lowering Ceremony!

THE BUILDING OF LEMOORE NAS

In 1954, the Navy searched the Northern California-Nevada area for land to build a master jet air station - one with congestion free air space.

Lemoore was chosen because of its central location, good weather for flying, relatively inexpensive land and the nearby accommodations. Construction started in 1958. With base housing, administration facilities and the flight training areas in operation, the air station was commissioned on July 8, 1961.

Located in the San Joaquin Valley approximately 40 miles south of Fresno, CA, nearly 5,000 military and 1,000 civilian employees work onboard, with an average payroll of $120 million per year.

NAS Lemoore's primary mission is to support fleet carrier squadrons. The heart of this mission is the operations area. Designed to support more than twenty fleet squadrons, it serves as a master training center for carrier-based strike fighter squadrons of the United States Pacific Fleet.

A week from today I will in Lemmore at this time. I'm getting excited and nervous at the same time. I'm having a hard time with the fact that my first born will be 20 years old!! Barbara if he crossrates does that mean he will have to change jobs??

I thought that I read that there is a hold on some of the C schooling because there aren't positions open for them. Did anyone else read or hear that?
Comment by carol on June 14, 2009 at 8:47pm
You would think that they would want to keep guys who knew what they were doing. Good luck to your son.

Barbara, was that on purpose? It was a nice way to stand out in the sea of Barbaras!

Welcome, Barb. Glad you are here. My son got to Lemoore in March. He is going on the Nimitz. He is currently home on leave for a few more days. He also says it is HOT.

That's true, Janet, they get into their routine and get used to it. They learn that many people have parts of their jobs that are difficult. But you carry on the very best you can.

Thanks, Barbara and Kim. My son really doesn't say anything negative, except for the weather. He does have a friend with a car, and one day they drove to Sequoia National Park. It is boring there as opposed to Pensacola, but we skype alot so far. He will be on deployment soon, so we take one day at a time. He is in for 5, so I am glad that he isn't negative. He did want the west coast. There is more to do on base than on the ship, though. I pray alot, too.

Serena my son also got there in March. I cried like B/C all over again the day he left for Lemoore but I knew he wasn't being deployed so I could see him.
There are many sailors from Fl in Lemoore, maybe if he doesn't get deployed right away he will meet them. My son hated it when he first got there. He is
doing better now just wishes he had a car! You need a car there, to be able to go off base. How old is your sailor and what is an AM? If you check out the discussions above you can see alot of kids jobs and squadrons. Hopefully you will get to hear from him before he deploys tomorrow! Your all in my prayers!

My son got there in March. He was happy with the West Coast. It's hot. Otherwise, he is content. He was already experienced living away from home, and he could not be home for his birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter this year. Just getting him ready for the deployment. He is home on leave right now, but since BC in Oct, we have seen him twice. He is fine and taking every thing in stride, so I'm ok. Doesn't mean I don't cry when he leaves, but we have Skyped with him on the computer, and he is visiting with all his friends and relatives and just enjoying everyone. He doesn't say anything negative, just the heat. He has made some good buddies, and always finds something funny to relay to his dad. This probably doesn't help you, Serena. I just want you to know that I will pray for you all. What is your son, and what ship is he with?
Comment by becky m on June 5, 2009 at 6:49pm
Just talked to Jason. Hes kinda bummed I guess his buddy went on a training mission, and he will be lost for awhile, till we get there. He doesn't know of anyone he knows having the flu Kim. Hope yours is feeling better now!!
Has anyone heard of the Navy not letting anyone re-up at this time??
What suggestions does anyone who has been to Lemoore have for us to do while we are there??
