Lowering of Flag Ceremony Every Evening At Dusk & history of the Base

It's well worth taking the time to see the Flag Lowering Ceremony!

THE BUILDING OF LEMOORE NAS

In 1954, the Navy searched the Northern California-Nevada area for land to build a master jet air station - one with congestion free air space.

Lemoore was chosen because of its central location, good weather for flying, relatively inexpensive land and the nearby accommodations. Construction started in 1958. With base housing, administration facilities and the flight training areas in operation, the air station was commissioned on July 8, 1961.

Located in the San Joaquin Valley approximately 40 miles south of Fresno, CA, nearly 5,000 military and 1,000 civilian employees work onboard, with an average payroll of $120 million per year.

NAS Lemoore's primary mission is to support fleet carrier squadrons. The heart of this mission is the operations area. Designed to support more than twenty fleet squadrons, it serves as a master training center for carrier-based strike fighter squadrons of the United States Pacific Fleet.

Ohiomom, I wanted to thank you for your offer, and tell you that I will tell my son to look for Cody.

Johna I don't see anything either.

Johna - I am not sure how the leave time works to be honest.  But they will figure it out.  Don't worry about crying in front on him.  I do it all the time.  This last time we went out to California for Christmas and New Years so we were out there for 2 1/2 weeks and when I was leaving I was balling like a baby, I told my son I was sorry, he said don't worry Mom, I am crying to - then we both laughed, so we departed on laughs!!  He always knows how to make me laugh.  It is much easier now with texting, calling on the phone, FaceTime whenever we want.  He is coming home for 2 weeks this summer but it seems like forever.  We are probably going back out there again for Christmas and New Year too, it was much nicer than being here in the cold and snow.  Good Luck!

Ohiomom, I commented on your response, but I'm not finding it anywhere.  Did you see it?

Michael's flight was cancelled due to weather, I'm wondering if the 2 extra days he was home will count towards his leave time?  He leaves tonight, and I'm a wreck, these goodbyes are so very hard, I pray that I won't cry in front of him.  He's gonna be a long way from home this time.  Already saving money to go to Cali!

Welcome Johna. My son has been there for about a year. He too is an AM for 122. It's hard being the new guy. But my son Cody would be happy to show him around.

Hey Johna......Welcome to the group. My daughter is with squadron 122. It's a practice squadron. It doesn't get deployed. My daughter is a AO. He will like that squadron. It's warm during the day but cold at night and it's very dry over there. The town is small but not far from thing a to do. Fresno is about 30 mins away. Good luck to your sailor in Lemoore!!!

Hi everybody I'm new to the group, my son is home now will be leaving Wednesday for Lemoore, as he just graduated A school. He is a structural air mechanic assigned to squadron 122.  He's very excited!  Nice to know I have a place to learn information.

Welcome SamsmySailor! Maybe our sons are in the same squadron because my son is an AD and currently on a short deployment. It's very odd not to know where he is!
Comment by Jenn (Proud AO Mom) on January 24, 2014 at 3:43pm

Welcome Sams!  My sailor has been in Lemoore since Feb. 2012. He's an AO with VFA 41.  He didn't get a car until he had been there over a year - but that was partly because he deployed 7 months after he got there.  But that worked out really well since he had a lot saved up after he got back.  He really likes the freedom that comes with having a car - but he was always able to work out rides before that without too much trouble.
