PhoenixMom:  They are threatened with being asmoed (setback) alot during training.  So they are always conscious of being setback...and of course, they want OUT of there.  That is why many don't go to medical when sick (and most get sick at some point, but they get through it).  But they are watched carefully and if they need to get to medical, they will.  My son was asmoed for a week when there and couldn't wait to get back to training.  So glad you got a call.

Just remember that the future letters/phone calls will become more and more positive as they get accomplishments under their belts and see their sailor caps looming in the distance.

Good luck, allie!  Study hard!

PhoenixMom, I remember when my son got his first real phone call home, he sounded really strong when he said hi, but his voice really started quivering when I said hi back.  I think he just was so glad to hear my voice that he was almost in tears.  He will become more confident as time goes on, and even though he will still miss everyone, his days will be so busy, that he will have a new normal.  It is very normal for them to worry about getting setback.  I'm sure he will do just fine.  Great advice to keep those letters encouraging.

I received my call yesterday today, too!  It was so great to hear his voice.  He sounded really tired but he is homesick.  Afraid something will happen to cause him to miss his PIR date.  Encouragement is needed for these guys so we all need to stay strong.  35 days to PIR!

Congrats to everyone who got phone calls today! I got more letters, so I'll take those and be one happy future sailor's girlfriend. :)

Sorry I've been MIA today - it's coming up on finals week and school has been NUTS. It's definitely making time go by faster, though. So, that's a plus. Have a great evening, all! :)

I got a phone call from my boyfriend tonight and I am so happy!!! It feels so good to hear his voice. I had been sad all day because I've been going through a rough time medically and I've been missing my fourteen year old cousin who died this past summer. Hearing his voice made my day a thousand times better. I wish I could smile the biggest smile in the world but a swollen face just won't allow it. I am smiling so big on the inside.

Woohoo, miriamj.  I guess the some calls are coming tonight!
