Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on January 17, 2013 at 11:34pm: I had NO IDEA about the water thing! And I had read what I thought was everything as far as do's and don't's( I don't travel by air at all). We had full Smart waters and had to dump them all. :-(
They were nice and asked us if we wanted to step outside and drink them. Yeah, like I want to have to have a very full bladder when boarding!LOL
Also, didn't have time to stop and by new ones before boarding...was very thirsty when we arrived in Chicago :-( Non stop from west coast.
Most airports have a dump stating so you can dump the water out before security, take the empty bottle through and then refill it after security.
Yuck though...wonder if they would let you take an empty personal Britta bottle through?

Comment by Marie ~ Proud Diver Mom on January 17, 2013 at 11:20pm: LadyHawk, we just returned from a flight to/from Phoenix. I had taken gifts to my other son in our CHECKED luggage. I had all kinds of stuff in there. I don't think it matters what you put into your luggage as long as you check it. The biggest problems occur when you try to board the plane with just about anything including water.

Comment by Arwen on January 17, 2013 at 10:21pm: My son's first stop was a good barber - he was already a briefs guy so the underwear didn't matter, but the haircut he last got from the base barber was horrid.

A lot of the girls go straight to a good day spa for a decent cut/style, sometimes some color help, and a mani/pedi. For girls who have to go back to RTC, this is the better choice. Anything from Victoria's Secret would not be allowed on base, and they better report back to RTC in those grannies!

My Sailor/daughter's first stop in the mall was Victoria's Secret and the second stop was the bathroom to change out of those granny panties, which then went into the trash lol. They can't wait to get rid of those :)

They are the same size he has been sending letters in, just lined. Are these okay to send or do I need to purchase ones exactly like he has been sending?
