N4M's Community Guidelines

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Arwen - Have you ever seen any pictures of Marvin Shields besides this one?  I am writing his story and I haven't found any,  which is really strange.  You'd think the Seabee museum would have at least a couple. I find it strange the family never released any picture, or maybe they did and I can't find them...  Being the only Seabee Medal of Honor winner, you'd think there would be a lot...

Do we pick up the shirts after PIR or do they get shipped?

The coins are a very new tradition. While the legend has the first coins being issued during WWI, but the earliest confirmed coins were minted by a single Army unit near the end or just after WWII. They became popular among a number of "elite" Army units in Vietnam, and spread to other Army units in the 70s and 80s.

The tradition didn't find its way to the Navy until the mid 90s - so in the Navy the tradition goes back 20 years, at most.

I never even heard of the coins when I was in the Navy, in the late 80s and early 90s.

That said, when my grandfather, a WWII Army medic, visited my son's PIR in 2009, he handed out coins we had made for the event to sailors who were going to be corpsmen. He told them a couple of his stories (try to stop him, LOL) and the young sailors went away, very impressed and really looking at the symbols and engravings on the coin. My grandfather was very proud of his ability to make the connection to the new young generation of military medical rescuers.

Marvin Shield's gravesite is just a few miles from our home. Every year I go (as part of my job) to the Memorial Day ceremony that is held there by Seabees, some of whom travel more than 1,000 miles to attend the event.

@DNmom that's awesome about our boys and what a great idea to record your son's voice!

To anyone who plans to order shirts - make sure your sailor knows you are doing it. My son purchased shirts for the whole family, in addition to the ones he bought for himself.

I just spoke to my SR as well.  I am one happy momma :)  He sounded good but has had all 4 wisdom teeth out on Jan 3rd and was sick with sinus infection prior to that.   @ nicksmom, I asked him if he knew your SR and he said yes.  I guess they have been talking about us talking..lol. He was sick when they did their first fitness test so he still has to do that. He said he is still on schedule so that's awesome news. When the phone rang and I saw pay phone...I went wild getting to the phone. My daughter recorded his voice so we can listen over and over until he gets to call again.
