Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Make sure to read our Community Guidelines and this Navy Operations Security (OPSEC) checklist - loose lips sink ships!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Comment by Craig on January 6, 2013 at 11:02pm: Arwen - I have 4 laptops scattered throughout the house. Each one is now truly a desktop since the battery life is like 3 minutes. Whenever the battery life fall below 30 minutes I buy a new one... Ok, that's a bunch of BS. It's when I have wrote like 2 hours of a document and forgot to save it and it gets blown away because the AC adapter fell out, then I buy a new one. ~ha

What truly is amazing is my wife IPAD, Geez that thing last forever....

Comment by Arwen on January 6, 2013 at 10:34pm: As was explained, the Navy Lodge is on base - just not a gated part of the base. There are fenced base areas, and unfenced, public-accessible areas. The Navy Lodge is on base, in the Navy Housing section that is not fenced or gated.

Comment by Arwen on January 6, 2013 at 10:31pm: Oh, yeah, and my son got an amazing deal on a desktop when he was at a 4-month A-school. Another sailor at the school purchased a $2,500 system with all the bells and whistles and big-screen monitor, then got assigned to a sea billet. Chris bought the computer from him for $300, used it until he himself got sea duty - then shipped it home as a gift to the family. We very much enjoy that sailor's $2,500 investment, daily.

Comment by Arwen on January 6, 2013 at 10:20pm: Craig, I have a Dell Inspiron 1520. I used to carry it to all of my classes in college, I used it to take notes. Now it's pretending to be a desktop, but it does come with me on long trips. Its battery life is 3-5 hours, using the extended battery I purchased at the same time I got the computer. The regular battery gives me 2-4 hours.

My daughter's computer is a Dell Insprion B130, as is the computer we currently use with our TV. Her battery life isn't as good. When new, it was about 2 hours, now it's more like 20 minutes. But all she really needs is a new battery.

He was older (almost 24) and had been a good saver before the Navy...he said they were buyin Xboxes, computers, phones, some even cars. The do make the sailors attend a financial class to teach them about their money, etc....but what they do with it after that is their business....uh oh.... :-)
