~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.
~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.
~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.
~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

diannep, I feel your pain. Only with me it was my mom. I told her about the quart bag rule, so she packed 5 of them in her carry on. Luckly our airport is really small so they let me help her figure it out. Now she's a champ.
As to the computer thing, thanks for the advice. My SR's laptop is only about 2 years old and will only work if it's plugged in. I wasn't going to take it for him, but now I will to close the gap. Just received a letter today. Now I'm a happy mommy. He's the "Head Education Petty Officer" whatever that is, and has a collar device. He also sent a letter for me to take to his recruiter. He is happy and doing well. Who could ask for more.
I agree MissElly
thank you ellen!! My son's friends have last names that begin with S and B. The SR with a last name of S swore in at MEPS in Portland Or I may have a pic of him. If this might be your recruit, send me a PM or a friend request with your SR's last name in the message portion of the request, then we can PM each other. Thanks.
He also wrote He really appreciated me sending an sase included with a letter and some stamps.

He passed his swim test,He is looking forward to the captains cup. His favorite thing is CHOW and Marching, least fav thing... no fraternizing. He loved the multiple choice form letters 33 days to PIR
arebeb i like your idea, would that be for both div 99 and 100? or no.
Exactly, Lala ! Our kids have been raised in the "instant gratification" stage...the laptops, cellphones, with their instant connection/info, make it hard for them to develop patience. Remember the days when you actually saved up for what you wanted to buy (I still do!)? The impulsivity out there is scary....
Not to mention...just sent my older son off on a business trip. Hasn't flown in so long that he had no clue about the quart bag thing (he is doing carryon). Well, DUH! You don't wait until the night before you leave to figure this out (he is almost 29 so should know better). He started complaining about the stupid rules for the airlines....well, whatever...crazy people out there causing the rules....but rules are rules....comply, quit your complaining, and get your stuff! He finally got it together, left for the airport...and I see his phone charger in his room....sigh....texted him "phone charger?" His answer was "oh well." Lucky for him, one of his co-workers isn't flying out until tomorrow and is supposed to come by and get it for him.
I'm thinking--how hard is it to....1) have a list of what you want to make sure to take with you ready long before departure day, 2) find out online what you can/cannot take in carryon 3) start preparing before actual D Day arrives. Sigh....this is my do-it-later son...Navy son has it more together on things like this....but is not much of a list maker either. Whatever....their lives and consequences!
Sorry for venting! :-)
Lala, I like your advice of waiting 48 hours before purchasing. This is good advice before saying something ugly to someone too! My mom always taught me to write a letter/email in anger if I must, but don't send it for at least a day. Funny how when I follow her advice, I rarely sent it. Raw emotions can cause "loose lips" ! Letting emotions settle back down creates better judgment.
I think part of the reason the Sailors buy these more expensive electronics is because they "want it now" My Sailor was the same way. She wanted a computer so bad when she got to A-school. Thank goodness she called me when she was looking at them at the NEX. I went online while on the phone with her and told her it was not a good deal. She kept saying I don't want to wait for two more weeks. She had not phased up yet and wasn't allowed off base. It was not easy to convince her to wait but I did it lol. I kept saying you didn't have one for 8 weeks two more weeks won't be a big deal and after a couple days she found other things to occupy her time and waited until she could get off base to make the purchase. The sad thing is once she was in classes and got bust she didn't use that much. Once she was out of A-school and can use the computer at work she rarely uses the laptop at all. Of course she has an iPhone she uses a lot but she used the computer so little that even though she waited and got a much better price she still regretted spending that money. We always tell our kids to wait at least 48 hours and think about the purchase before spending more than $50 on anything.
Good morning :)
Good Morning All! Have a wonderful weekend!
I have both, Craig. Laptop is from 2007. However, must say, mostly use it in the house plugged in, so battery probably is very weak! :-) It is kind of a backup computer for us....but it is a Hewlett Packard and no problems plugged in.
I do understand though why the sailors would buy the cheaper ones, Mine did too...thankfully... as he spilled Coke on his and ruined it (took it in to see about fixing it ... no can do). The one he has now didn't cost much either and he has had it for about 1.5 yrs.
Totally understand your explanation of them going into debt for things like this. Yep, totally get that!
I always pass on your advice to the new ladies on here about suggesting to their sailors to check out electronics prices off base too.. Hopefully these sailors will have the patience to check these things out rather than impulsively buying. Impulsive buying seems to be a problem for many people!
Arwen & diannep - Do you truly have laptops, or, do you have a desktop? I know of no laptop battery from the 2007 era that will last more than 20 minutes. I know of no HP laptop from that same era that doesn't have a faulty power supply jack.
Yea, you could buy a battery ($100) and you could get the power supply jack fixed for $100. But why invest in a computer that has Windows ME or Vista? Why not just buy a cheapie Dell or Toshiba? You could buy 3 of them for the price of one HP at the NEX and can have the newest OS
What I find sad is I see sailors buy these expensive laptops at the NEX on their MILITARY STAR Credit card only to go into debt. They can't afford it. They buy them because it convenient because they can't get to places like the Best Buy or others to price compare. The sailors that buy these expensive laptops are doing the "Champagne taste or a beer budget" mentality. They go into debt, and they end up having to go to debt management classes because they don't pay their bills. I've seen it time, and time again.
What moms need to know is the NEX is not the cheapest for computers. The "tax free" looks good on the surface, but you get last years model. You can't even price match them because they're too old. The computer world changes daily. Buy the newest (in my view) place that constantly revolves it's stock.
