Yes...Enlisted personnel in the Navy have "rate" not "rank". These are also associated with their pay grade. Enlisted Personnel rates are E-1 to E-9.
All recruits in BC are SR's...Seaman Recruits.
E-1 is a Seaman Recruit or SR...Yes even after grad they are still a "recruit”.
E-2 is a Seaman Apprentice or SA
E-3 is a Seaman or SN.
Now, this also depends on their group.
There is:
Hospitalman - HR, HA, HN
Dentalman - DR, DA, DN
(I have not heard the above two used a lot but they were on the sites below- 2009 being the most recent that I could find)
Constructionman - CR, CA, CN
Airman - AR, AA, AN
Fireman - FR, FA, FN
Now, will your recruit be "called" that after BC? Most likely not. E-1's to E-3's are considered to be in "apprenticeship" positions after they have graduated "A' school (if they have one... UNDESignated Sailors do not go to "A" school after Boot). Most likely they will just be referred to by their last name.
But they will have stripes on their dress uniforms and their NSU's...the "Peanut Butters"...none for E-1's, 2 for E-2's and 3 for E-3's. So you will see this at PIR if they went in as an E-2 or E-3. I am not sure if this will be so if they "rank up"(yes, to further confuse us it is called ranking up...LOL) during BC but I would assume so.
You can earn a higher rate during BC for various reasons. Exceptional conduct and taking your PQS if you were a Depper are a couple of them.
Does that make sense...kinda tired today!
Here are two links for you to look at:

FTLW- That is too funny! Thanks for the laugh!
And btw, I think eating with the dogs would be a lot less confusing! Just all the different lingo you would be hearing would have me toungue-tied. LOL
Happy Pi Day, everyone!
Hey - there's a dozen members now, yeah!
prayin'navymom - Then your second grader 'outranks" your other two! LOL
juliebelle28 - What's dinner like at your table?
I want to know because hubby is AF, oldest son is Navy and second son is going to go Army (God willing)...think I'll eat dinner with the dogs!LOL
Well FTLW is much more the expert on that. But I am pretty sure E-3 is the highest you can come out of bootcamp with. Rate is for enlisted: E-1 E-2 etc, rating is their job, my daughter is an AO (Aviation Ordnanceman) Rank is for officers only. There is competition with my Sailors as well. My daughter continues to outrank her husband lol and according to her she always will :-)
Awe, 2nd graders are so cute, wait I mean cool :-) I subbed today for 2nd graders.
I am lost when it comes to this "E" talk..lol...but hey...Nothing wrong with some good ole' brotherly competiiton! It will be interesting to see who gets to E4 first!
My SR went in as an E3 and has no competition to face with his 2 brothers..one is heading into law enforcement and one is in the 2nd grade...lol...the 2nd grader just keeps saying "Brett needs to come back home!
"rank" is reserved for officer status. FTLW has more info on this!
Julie & Prayin'navymom ~ I'd be interested in comparing the address I received also. I'll PM you both.
Hi Julie, Not sure the address the recruiter gave me is correct. Can you give it to me to make sure - before I mail out this mountain of letters? Thanks a bunch!
