I have been flying back and forth from New York to florida since July( My SR lived in florida, I am from NY). So here is some of my airline tricks.
-Tickets are cheaper usually on tuesdays(some times they go down almost 50 dollars)
-South West(i love them) like CB said you get free baggage and you do get to change your dates(Free of charge their customer service will help you with that, it is very simple), also if your plane ticket prices go down in price from the time you buy them you can get that cheaper price and have a left over amount in an account for future use (: (had to use that once, also).
-Almost all air carriers charge for bags but the trick is you don't always have to check a bag! Woohoo bending the rules. You can take a smaller suitcase that is within the carry bag size and i know for air tran you get a purse/a check on. I use to take on a small bag full of tolitries and then my carry on would have clothes, etc. This i think would be better because you don't need that many clothes for a weekend and shoot its free with your plane ticket (:
-Do your research, sometimes orbitz/expedia have some really good deals. But i almost always find better on their official sites (Air tran, South West, Jet Blue. are my favorite)
Sorry, this got BUMPED up ahead of the comments that followed, because I copy/pasted and re-posted to correct my typos. Oops!
If there's anyone that still needs airline tickets, Southwest has great rates on their "Wanna Get Away" package. I got $77.00 each way for the days I wanted. The best thing is the FREE baggage.I got this price yesterday. Had to fly into midway, but that's not so much farther.
Be careful when shopping prices. Several times I almost took other deals that were so cheap, but CLICKING through the FINE PRINT, buried in oblivion, saw that there was an additional $30.00 for the carry on and $38.00 for any checked bags!!! That blew those deals out of the water! Deal my azz! My son-in-law was once a travel agent, and recommends making sure you buy before 2 weeks from travel date, so time is getting short if you waited.
Also, Southwest on this package does NOT give a refund, but they DO give you credit and let you change dates, should there be a different PIR date for your SR.
Juliebelle is so right. It's so much easier for us to get answers to our questions if they don't need to read through and write out everything. Now...If he would JUST send the dang thing back! I even gave him the SASE! Grrrr!
I remember what my son's last letter said. Starting the 9th was hell week, and not to expect much in the way of letters. And the weeks after would be extremely busy. They would be exhausted, worn out, and studying with every spare moment, and probably not taking much time to write. I sent him a letter saying that "although hearing every little detail means alot to me, PLEASE study instead. This is such a tiny fragment of time in the overall picture, and we will get through it. Please study instead of writing." Now whether he can do that I don't know, His girlfriend means so much to him, I'm sure he'll jot her a note. But I let him know it's okay to study instead of writing during his free time so he wouldn't stress about writing.
Awesome news about your marine Julie! Something to look forward to for sure!
Prayers and hugs to you Vivian! It has been very quiet on their end lately for sure.
Keep your chin up and keep smiling.
Emily is ok, and I am sure, she has alot of people supporting her!
Yeah I would much prefer not sending goodies and bootcamp lasting 8 week to being able to send goodies but it lasts 13 weeks lol.
I think one of the things that got me through the hard/sad times when I was missing my daughter at bootcamp was the fact that I knew exactly where she was. I knew she was not out with friends and I knew no one was drinking and driving and I didn't have to worry about car accidents or speeding tickets, drivers distracted by cell phones or texting and driving. Basically, I knew she was safe and sound even though I couldn't speak to her. It was still very hard and I cried a lot. I am way too tender hearted lol; but I survived with the help from all my friends on Navy for Moms :-) And you will too <3
Vivian, Hang in there, and trust in your daughter to give it all she's got. This means alot to her or she would have quit by now. She's in it for the long haul, and know that she's making every effort. Also know that there is tremendous peer pressure for her to succeed. NO WEAK LINKS! That's why you see the whole group gets punished for one SRs mistakes. It's to teach them to work as a team to reach a goal. While waiting for boot camp, my son helped all the DEPS with whatever they struggled with. He's a real team player and is in this for all. He would finish his run, swim, situps, pullups, pushups, whatever, then go run back to anyone straggling behind, and get right beside them and do them again, encouraging them the whole way, until the group was done. (That's why he's so fit, I guess). Emily is in his Division, I guarantee you he is right there pulling for her along with everyone else in the division. She will be fine. Her heart is in this. We are all having tough days. Don't let them get the best of you. Be STRONG for Emily. Never let them see you sweat, always let them see that you have total confidence in them, and that you know they are doing an awesome job. Encouragement and a CAN DO attitude is what they ALL need right now.
Vivian! I know how you feel. And, I'm sure all us Mom's have had those nights as well...We can only trust that our children have leanred from the things that happened in their past when we could be around to guide them and can draw on those experiences to make better choices today. Take a deep breath and trust that you have laid a great ground work for your child to draw from and that you are not alone with these worries. And have a piece of chocolate, works for me :) (((Hugs)))
emilysmom: Try and go on the "no news is good news" theory. If you haven't received a call from her, she is still in her division and training. Believe me, she won't be procrastinating during bootcamp! Not allowed! Her division should be doing BattleStations most likely the beginning of PIR week (she will know specific day) so you won't be getting the I'm a Sailor call until that week. In the meantime, just keep praying and sending letters of encouragement.
