~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Good Morning All !

bchis:  If she is still in A School during Christmas vacation, then like ellen said, yes, the base goes on STAND DOWN and usually the sailors can come home (Leave) for a little while.  Liberty is different than Leave.  Leave is "earned" time....they accumulate 2.5 days a month of Leave.  Here is a further explanation from one of the long-time veterans on here:

http://www.navyformoms.com/profiles/blogs/leave-vs-liberty

Also, if they work with their recruiter when they come home after A School, the days they work with him/her do not count as Leave and they keep those days.  It can only be done after the completion of school though...your sailor contacts her recruiter to arrange this if she is interested.

She will know more about Leave during Christmas Stand Down once she arrives on that base and goes through INDOC.

Wait... Leave like, come home leave??? Like NOT liberty leave?? lol - Don't get me excited now... That's a lot of time for leave!

Comment by ellen0502 on August 16, 2013 at 8:59pm

bchis, They do get leave during holiday stand down. The dates vary a little year to year, but it usually starts around Dec 21st and ends approx Jan 6th. The bases all have their own schedule and dates can vary.

Thank you for the info! She is going to be staying in GL.

Ok, so if I understood that correctly, when she phases has little to do with when her class fills up and she is actually able to start A-school? She doesn't have to wait to start classes to phase up? That's a plus...

Since she has to wait another month to start, the question of Christmas/New Years is going to come up now... Do they get time off for that or is it just depending on different variables?

For those of you looking for a special gift for your SR-soon-to-be-Sailor, please check out www.pirgifts.com .  They have Challenge Coins, which are a military tradition.  Craig, who is one of thei administrators on Navy for Moms, designed the ones that are connected to the ships at RTC.  The name of your SR's ship is right next to the ship number in the Discussion section.  When you click on one of the coins, you will be taken to a page where there is a video about Challenge Coins.  This would be a special gift especially connected to their Boot Camp days!  Another really sharp coin is the Core Values one in the section where 70 other coins are available--it has cut outs and a diamond cut beveled edge.  These coins are no longer given out by the Navy to the Sailors, so it is up to friends and family.  My Sailor daughter thought hers was "cool" when I gave it to her after PIR!

bchis,

The older posts don't apply anymore, so you should disregard those.  The ones 2012 and newer should be more current and correct.  Really, RTC procedures have changed since the beginning of this year 2013!

At A school, the new Sailors will have about 2 weeks of Phase I where they have to be in uniform at all times and will be mustering (getting together for roll call), cleaning, volunteering to serve in the community while waiting for enough new Sailors to arrive to form a new class to go through training, which is called "classing up."  This can take about 2 weeks to a few months average.  After they have classed up is when the actual training time for her rating (job) will start.  Phasing up and classing up are two separate occurrences.

Phase II will be when they can wear civilian clothes during their off time and will have liberty to be able to go offbase with a liberty buddy (family can serve as a liberty buddy).  Choose a weekend to visit that your wife doesn't have watch duty.  She will know her schedule.

Where will your wife's A school be?  This will make a difference for you to time how soon you can see her after PIR.  If you haven't already done so, join the A school group where your wife will be going to as those moms/family members may have already visited their Sailors and can guide you better~~

Div 334 called today :)

Comment by bchis on August 16, 2013 at 7:35pm

I feel like I've seen 25 different answers to this question and each gets less clear.

My SR will have about a month before her A-School starts after PIR weekend... What does she do during that month? Is she allowed liberty? I've read posts from 2006 saying she can come home. Then in 2009 saying she will only get liberty. Then 2010 saying she can't leave and will just clean and do random tasks until class starts...

I know she will be able to communicate... but adding another freaking 1 1/2 months before I can see her will be very aggravating. 1 month having to wait for school and then another half a month to phase up.

YEA...just got a call from ship 12/Division 331. He said call was suppose to be 1 hour but of course it wasn't...we got to talk about 7 min...he has is orders, said Hell week was HELL, got Marksmen on shooting. Said it was the same thing every day, wake up at 430, get yelled at all day, eat crappy food and do it all over again. But he sounded great, just tired! SO HAPPY to hear from him! Hope others get calls too!!
