Yeah hurley - he was all set to go to OCS last Nov/Dec but he'd failed one PRT test in August (they called him to do it the day after his much beloved grandfather was buried - missed the run by 20 seconds). They called him for another one two weeks before OCS which he also failed - kid had the bird flu or swine flu or whatever it was, so that was it, he didn't get to go to Rhode Island and became enlisted. Tough break and it took him two courses of antibiotics/steroids and about a month to recover but it is what it is. Because he was in the BDCP he owed two years enlisted service if OCS didn't happen but the kid says he wants to be career Navy.

Just got my last letter sent from boot camp today! Dated August 7th :-) Old news but he said their division had gone from 74 down to 66 by then, including one guy who broke his thumb slipping on a fresh swabbed deck - poor guy. You just never know what's going to mess things up!

Matt spent his birthday on saturday standing duty. He will be on his 2 weeks before he ships out before Thanksgiving so no holidays with him this year. He started A" school today and loves it.

AJ- I have to go through it again too with the Coast Guard Reserves but my son is getting frustrated with them and thinks he'll do Navy reserves instead, they are giving a signing bonus.

Kristy, nothing plain about a machinist mate. That's what my CG son is going in for. Lots of opportunity if he decides to come out after his time is up.

Shelly (Dyl's Mom) I wish he would be home Christmas but he will be stationed and I guess the Navy doesn't close for holidays. LOL It's gunna be weird.

Wow LynB, I didn't know he tried OCS first. Gotta give him credit. I know my nephew who is an officer in the Navy said the enlisted had it a lot harder and didn't think he could have gone through it like his cousin did and he's a doctor!

hurstmichelle, Hooyah!

Mary, HI!

These follow up stories of growth, excitement and newness are inspiring. LynB and Michelle - you must feel so relieved and happy to know that they are well off on the next step of their adventures.

hurstmichelle - Congratulations to you and your Sailor!

Dyl - yes my older son is preparing to enlist in the Navy by the end of the month. Here I go again! If you had asked me if this is what both of my boys would be doing a year ago, I would never have guessed it.

Mary -- I'll trade my October birthday with A for your Christmas! A will be far away by Christmas.

Nicole - thanks for setting up the other group - have not gone over yet, but will.

Congratulations hurstmichelle! SO glad he made it :-)

And michellep - I liked your comment about your son feeling in control of his life. I finally got to skype with my son for 2 hours yesterday which was fantastic but what really made me happy was him saying towards the end that looking at it all, the last 9 months since he washed out of OCS and waited and now experienced boot camp have made all the difference.

He admits he was never fully confident about OCS and that certainly contributed to him lousing it up. Thinks that if he'd gone to OCS and made it he probably would have been fairly average as an officer. Experiencing boot camp and being enlisted and undesignated has been a huge wake up call and now he feels like, if he can get somewhere and have a chance to grow, he'll take full advantage...because now he actually cares about being good at what he does. Before things came pretty easy so he went with the flow and did what he felt like, didn't have to care much or work particularly hard. Having all that taken away has gotten his attention in some excellent ways.

Says he's definitely grown up in the past 9 months...and I fully believe him when he says it :-) Makes me happy, regardless of what comes next I'm confident he's going to work hard and try to do his best. Which is what us parents always say we want our kids to do. Took him 25 years to get to where he appreciates what hard work and a good attitude can do for you but thank goodness he's figured it out :-)

I would love to see my son again soon but i guess i'm stuck waiting until xmas stand-down. :( So, AJ, is your older son joining the Navy too?
Michelle, i don't know if i remember what your son's rate was? It's so nice that your son is adjusting so well. That's great!
Thanks Tea for the prayers! Awesome as always!

Hello -- just spent 2 1/2 hours at the recruiters office with my older son. Deja vu ... !!!!

I am returning to Great Lakes for A's birthday Oct 10 as he does not start A school until Oct 13. By then he should have earned Phase II liberty. Yahoo!

Take good care of yourselves ladies!

Sounds like Greg really has the swing of things Michelle. Bet the home cooked meal tasted just great! Can't wait to cook for Matthew. He loves mashed potatoes and meatloaf. OK, he's easy. Greg can go into DC already? Lucky him. So many great things to see and do there.

Nichole, be careful on your way there.
