Hi everyone! Well, we are officially spending our first full day of being civies again looking at apartments in San Diego and got to enjoy a morning of sleeping in. LOL. Getting up at 4 am every morning and not hitting the hay until around 12 am every day was really starting to wear on me. I'm young, but I'm a mommy to a 6 mo old baby who loves to play and fuss in the middle of the night! :)
Anyways, LIFE IS GOOD! this feels so right and I know things are going to work out just fine. I feel bad, because I know all of you have years and years left of tension and waiting. And I'm still going to be right there, along side you guys, trust me! I have a lot of friends joining the military this year and next year, plus one of my best friends just left for Afghanistan last week.
We are about to go "apartment shopping" and will be having a lot of fun doing that. It's a beautiful day here in CA and I'm ready to "start fresh." Paul said yesterday was really difficult, because everyone was upset at him, but now he's done with that and we're making this day nice and fun. Our 1st anniversary is next Monday!!!! We're really hoping to do something special for that. Much to Ensign Strobel's dismay, we did get travel advance, so we have money to move and get an apartment! YAY!!!!! And we're able to get on welfare for just a little bit until Paul has a job. We're pretty sure Fry's is going to work out, but we're waiting on them to call him back.
I know, know, know this is what God has for us, so I know he is going to provide. This time in the Navy was difficult to say the least, but I think it was God's way of saying to us that He had a different plan. We were going to move back to Texas to go to school, but we figured that we'd rather stay in San Diego, get stable and then save up, then move back to Texas. :) My parents are moving to Ecuador to be missionaries, most likely, in the next few months and Paul's parents hate both of us. It was his birthday last Monday and NONE of them called him or wished him happy birthday, or anything. It's very disappointing.
Well, I hope everyone has an GREAT day! Gotta run. My little fusser needs me. :)
So, as this is now published, I can share that they had a port visit about a week ago in Oman. While I love the history of that part of the world (home to the Queen of Sheba, etc.) ..... it was not a particularly cool or fun place to visit for Aaron. He said it was a culture shock and a sand pit. Apparently a few of them were scammed right away. There was supposed to be a party that they could attend for $$ and some of them paid to be able to go (and with not a lot to do there, it was at least something) .... and when they showed up at the address, it was something like a store like a Wal-Mart .... and no party. They were bummed and angry for losing the money. I guess this is how they learn discernment and good judgment with what all is thrown at them when they reach port. So, he has had one great port visit in Guam, and this less than fun visit in Oman. It was good to get off the ship though after so many days of nothing but open water.
I've only had 3 calls since he deployed, one from Hawaii, one from Guam, and one from the ship .... oh and missed the one from the ship last week.
Last night a bizarre thing happened and just in case it is a scam that others might pursue with your family, I thought I would share a bit of it. So, someone called Aaron's paternal grandmother claiming to be Aaron, saying that he was in Costa Rica, was going to go to a friend's wedding, was going to be coming home soon for a visit, was in trouble and needed help ... and then the person said they had to go and quickly hung up. She totally believed she was talking to Aaron. When she called Aaron's dad, he totally believed that she had heard from Aaron. He was all upset about how got off the ship and was in Costa Rica and in trouble. I said, guys, calm down, this has to be a scam ..... we know where he is and it is no where near Costa Rica ..... yadda, yadda, yadda. So the family is all calmed down now, but the strange part is that this person seemed to know way too much information that was and could have been true. I don't know if the scammers are targeting military families, or if it was some other vein of information. Pretty sick though. So just be aware that there is something going around and that they knew he was away and enticed her with his reference to coming home for a visit. Fortunately, the conversation ended before she could give any way to access money.
I've sent three care packages and he has finally received all three. He's totally into them now and I can send all that I want. The cheapest way to do this is to send the Large Priority Mail boxes from the post office. I can't remember if I already mentioned this to you or not ..... forgive me if I'm repeating myself ..... those boxes are normally $14.95 for anything that will fit in the box up to like 70 lbs. and they give a $2.00 discount for military family .... so $12.95 for all you can fit into the box. If you send larger boxes than this, it gets really expensive.
I don't know a lot of details about his day, his work, the college classes he's taking on the ship (other than which ones). I get the most information when he calls .... he's pretty frugal with words via e-mail ........ they just came off another River City ......... :(
I'm feeling like who has time to read all this crap you are writing, Angela .... so, I'll close for now. Have a good Thursday. :)
Good morning girls!
Loving, absolutely loving all the activity here!
What a great idea Mary, to give your daughter a gift certificate to have her hair colored any way she wants it. She will love it. I chuckle Mary when I hear how quickly Dereck wants what he wants when he wants it. I know we are all a bit like that at times .... but my chuckle comes from how l-o-o-o--n-n-n-g he will have to wait for things when they have to be shipped to him at sea.
I like your hair color choice Nicole and how much you did, assuming that is the bit in the picture. A little whimsical flair and not overdone .... we want you to get that job you are searching for too. I'm with you and Mary, change it up, color it up, all the way to December!
d o - that was one of the most amazing boot camp ideas I've heard! ..... hand-written messages written in the margins of the Bible ..... what super-powerful-turbo-charged-mom-fortified-encouragement and support! I can only imagine how meaningful that must have been for both your sons. How I wish I had thought of that .... and I had no idea you could get camo Bibles. You get the mom premium-platinum-star-studded-cool-award today for this one. What incredibly lucky boys you have.
Hurley .... I'm going to watch that video today .... and I'm lighting a candle today for Marc too .... we know that first few days are so rough. I know you know that we are all here to be surrogate CoastGuard4Moms for you. I was wondering though, would you ever consider starting your own group? We have a secret / private group on Facebook for Aaron's ship. It is easy to set up and requires an invitation from someone in the group to be accepted. There are no outside solicitations to the group to join as friends. We can be a little more free in our expressions, but still have to watch out for OPSEC, and the Ombudsman Team (two Sailors wives) are members too .... so we do keep that in mind. Do you know any of the other moms at all?
Iris - I am relieved to hear that VD has backed off with Haley and that there were no scenes or horrible uncomfortable moments for her. Any word how Travis is doing? Is she super tan by now? It is just so cool to know that she is in Hawaii. Is she finished with her training? Will she be assigned to a ship? Do you know which one if so? I've lost track of what her rate is and what she is doing.
Looking forward to Iris's iris pictures.
Proud navy mom ... are things still on track with your daughter?
Mrs. B ..... did everything happen as it was supposed to yesterday? How did the meeting go? Hoping you have heard the affirmative word on the job at Fry's. That is such a cool store. We are eager to here 'the rest of the story' when you can share.
I'll start another post to update you guys on Aaron.
I went somewhere, had I done it myself it woulda been a mess!!!
I'm happy with it though, and oh yes, that's why i'm doing it now. I'm gonna keep changing it until december then to a normal haircolor.!
