Ok, well guess what, I missed a phone call from Marc! Actually two calls. The only day I leave the house in over a week for a bunch of doctor spots. And he happens to call! It's not like he was calling for a normal phone call but he left a message saying he needs me to send his mouth guard. He gave me a general address and said "I love you mom". Ugggg, it brought tears to my eyes and then my second message was to make sure I put his name on it and then again he said" I love you very much". Ahhhhh! I was screaming all over the house that I missed his call being they don't get to call until 5 weeks and here I blew it by going to the drs.! He sounded ok, not robotic like Matts first call when he first arrived to BC. I guess the yhad him at dental today and they probably asked if he used anything in his mouth and he said yes cause he's so darn honest. I would have said yes but it broke, can you make me a new one? That thing cost me 400$ insuance won't cover it. Hopefully he will get a new one when he gets to his first base being this one is on it's way out. So I had his younger brother run around town looking for a post office to overnight it (seems every one has there own time limits!) so 21 bucks later and probably 15$ in gas it is finally on it's way to Cape May. It jus brought back so many memories of when our sailors were in BC and some missed phone calls too. Now I know how you all felt...oh well, it's just eight weeks! The CG forum is good, not like here but pretty good. The moderator found out Marcs command and and hall for me, they don't call them ships. I will let you in on more info when I get it

Ok, Nicole I love the blue. It look like just enough, not too much. Very cool. I love to be different, my kids say I am still a hippy, well, minus the drugs and braided armpits! We are all unique, so why look the same. We are all shapes and sizes so why look like that skinny super model, beauty is inside not what we can physically see. That is just what keeps our guts inside our bodies!

Hope you do watch the video on You Tube AJ, it's just eight weeks, I thought it was done well, a bit intimidating though. I have to ask Matt to watch it to see if the Navy was similar. Maybe the Navy downplayed theirs on you tube. Oh and OMG about that scam. Heard they hit grand parents. I guess if they read this web site about his whereabouts and all they can assume where he is or whereabouts. Everything on the web is public knowledge. I guess we tend to forget. ThNk goodness you knew better. Well I hear it's no fun in "the sand trap" countries. Too bad he fell for it. Lesson learned. I know when my husbands company sent to Saudi we stayed in a gated (barbed wire and all) camp. You didn't venture outside it, wasn't a smart idea. Unfortunately we bring our kids up to be honest and with that they think everyone is, they will learn, and fast

Haha Mary, so funny. Your boy deserves the box of goodies. Look how hard he works for it! And does he still have an attachment to his stove? Matts getting his itch to move out of the batchelors quarters cause he can't have a stave and boy does he miss it!

Oh d o, I so wish I did that to Marc bible before he left, but I really didn't think he was taking it. Such a great idea and what a way for them to see a part of you when they can't even get letters in the very beginning.

Mrs B, yeah! I am happy for your little family. Now your new life will begin. I can't believe the baby is 6 months already! Wow, we remember when he was still in your belly!

Proud mom, hmmm I know Matt said he's holding his breath on whether he'll get full pay, I guess I can ask him tomorrow for you to see if the cut is across the board. I think it sucks but hey, what can we do about it, nothing. It will work out in the end. I always say, it can always be worse!

Mrs. B, that is wonderful news. So glad they stepped up and provided money for you guys. That just didn't sound right to me that you  weren't going to get paid even though he was still enlisted until yesterday. God works in mysterious ways and we just have to believe and accept the road he has for each and everyone of us. Good luck in this next venture of your lives. God Bless!!!

Hi everyone! Well, we are officially spending our first full day of being civies again looking at apartments in San Diego and got to enjoy a morning of sleeping in. LOL. Getting up at 4 am every morning and not hitting the hay until around 12 am every day was really starting to wear on me. I'm young, but I'm a mommy to a 6 mo old baby who loves to play and fuss in the middle of the night! :)

Anyways, LIFE IS GOOD! this feels so right and I know things are going to work out just fine. I feel bad, because I know all of you have years and years left of tension and waiting. And I'm still going to be right there, along side you guys, trust me! I have a lot of friends joining the military this year and next year, plus one of my best friends just left for Afghanistan last week.

We are about to go "apartment shopping" and will be having a lot of fun doing that. It's a beautiful day here in CA and I'm ready to "start fresh." Paul said yesterday was really difficult, because everyone was upset at him, but now he's done with that and we're making this day nice and fun. Our 1st anniversary is next Monday!!!! We're really hoping to do something special for that. Much to Ensign Strobel's dismay, we did get travel advance, so we have money to move and get an apartment! YAY!!!!!  And we're able to get on welfare for just a little bit until Paul has a job. We're pretty sure Fry's is going to work out, but we're waiting on them to call him back.

I know, know, know this is what God has for us, so I know he is going to provide. This time in the Navy was difficult to say the least, but I think it was God's way of saying to us that He had a different plan.  We were going to move back to Texas to go to school, but we figured that we'd rather stay in San Diego, get stable and then save up, then move back to Texas. :)  My parents are moving to Ecuador to be missionaries, most likely, in the next few months and Paul's parents hate both of us. It was his birthday last Monday and NONE of them called him or wished him happy birthday, or anything. It's very disappointing.

Well, I hope everyone has an GREAT day! Gotta run. My little fusser needs me. :)

Proud navy mom - I did read that they would be receiving their full pay amount, but that it would be in at least two separate checks, and possibly more .... all based on how they dealt with the appropriations bill in Congress.  Hopefully she will get her full amount, but she will have to do the math to make sure it is correct.
Comment by Donna-Amanda's mom on April 14, 2011 at 11:59am
Well, my daughter said she received 2 checks today totalling $160. She said no one she knows got a regular check.Did anyone elses's sailors have that problem? Last I heard, they would all be getting full checks.

So, as this is now published, I can share that they had a port visit about a week ago in Oman.  While I love the history of that part of the world (home to the Queen of Sheba, etc.) ..... it was not a particularly cool or fun place to visit for Aaron.  He said it was a culture shock and a sand pit.  Apparently a few of them were scammed right away.  There was supposed to be a party that they could attend for $$ and some of them paid to be able to go (and with not a lot to do there, it was at least something) .... and when they showed up at the address, it was something like a store like a Wal-Mart .... and no party.  They were bummed and angry for losing the money.  I guess this is how they learn discernment and good judgment with what all is thrown at them when they reach port.  So, he has had one great port visit in Guam, and this less than fun visit in Oman.  It was good to get off the ship though after so many days of nothing but open water.

I've only had 3 calls since he deployed, one from Hawaii, one from Guam, and one from the ship .... oh and missed the one from the ship last week.

Last night a bizarre thing happened and just in case it is a scam that others might pursue with your family, I thought I would share a bit of it.  So, someone called Aaron's paternal grandmother claiming to be Aaron, saying that he was in Costa Rica, was going to go to a friend's wedding, was going to be coming home soon for a visit, was in trouble and needed help ... and then the person said they had to go and quickly hung up.  She totally believed she was talking to Aaron.  When she called Aaron's dad, he totally believed that she had heard from Aaron.  He was all upset about how got off the ship and was in Costa Rica and in trouble.  I said, guys, calm down, this has to be a scam ..... we know where he is and it is no where near Costa Rica ..... yadda, yadda, yadda.  So the family is all calmed down now, but the strange part is that this person seemed to know way too much information that was and could have been true.  I don't know if the scammers are targeting military families, or if it was some other vein of information.  Pretty sick though.  So just be aware that there is something going around and that they knew he was away and enticed her with his reference to coming home for a visit.  Fortunately, the conversation ended before she could give any way to access money.

I've sent three care packages and he has finally received all three.  He's totally into them now and I can send all that I want.  The cheapest way to do this is to send the Large Priority Mail boxes from the post office.  I can't remember if I already mentioned this to you or not ..... forgive me if I'm repeating myself ..... those boxes are normally $14.95 for anything that will fit in the box up to like 70 lbs. and they give a $2.00 discount for military family .... so $12.95 for all you can fit into the box.  If you send larger boxes than this, it gets really expensive.

I don't know a lot of details about his day, his work, the college classes he's taking on the ship (other than which ones).  I get the most information when he calls .... he's pretty frugal with words via e-mail ........ they just came off another River City ......... :(

I'm feeling like who has time to read all this crap you are writing, Angela .... so, I'll close for now.  Have a good Thursday.  :)

Good morning girls!

Loving, absolutely loving all the activity here!

What a great idea Mary, to give your daughter a gift certificate to have her hair colored any way she wants it.  She will love it.  I chuckle Mary when I hear how quickly Dereck wants what he wants when he wants it.  I know we are all a bit like that at times .... but my chuckle comes from how l-o-o-o--n-n-n-g he will have to wait for things when they have to be shipped to him at sea.

I like your hair color choice Nicole and how much you did, assuming that is the bit in the picture.  A little whimsical flair and not overdone .... we want you to get that job you are searching for too.  I'm with you and Mary, change it up, color it up, all the way to December!

d o - that was one of the most amazing boot camp ideas I've heard! ..... hand-written messages written in the margins of the Bible ..... what super-powerful-turbo-charged-mom-fortified-encouragement and support!  I can only imagine how meaningful that must have been for both your sons.  How I wish I had thought of that .... and I had no idea you could get camo Bibles.  You get the mom premium-platinum-star-studded-cool-award today for this one.  What incredibly lucky boys you have.

Hurley .... I'm going to watch that video today .... and I'm lighting a candle today for Marc too .... we know that first few days are so rough.  I know you know that we are all here to be surrogate CoastGuard4Moms for you.  I was wondering though, would you ever consider starting your own group?  We have a secret / private group on Facebook for Aaron's ship.  It is easy to set up and requires an invitation from someone in the group to be accepted.  There are no outside solicitations to the group to join as friends.  We can be a little more free in our expressions, but still have to watch out for OPSEC, and the Ombudsman Team (two Sailors wives) are members too .... so we do keep that in mind.  Do you know any of the other moms at all?

Iris - I am relieved to hear that VD has backed off with Haley and that there were no scenes or horrible uncomfortable moments for her.  Any word how Travis is doing?  Is she super tan by now?  It is just so cool to know that she is in Hawaii.  Is she finished with her training?  Will she be assigned to a ship?  Do you know which one if so?  I've lost track of what her rate is and what she is doing.

Looking forward to Iris's iris pictures.

Proud navy mom ... are things still on track with your daughter?

Mrs. B ..... did everything happen as it was supposed to yesterday?  How did the meeting go?  Hoping you have heard the affirmative word on the job at Fry's.  That is such a cool store.  We are eager to here 'the rest of the story' when you can share.

I'll start another post to update you guys on Aaron.

Oh d o, thank you so much for that. So funny because Marc never seems to read his bible and he was allowed to take it. I kept telling him all week to take his bible and he kept saying no.Well when he was leaving for the hotel the night before I noticed in his outer mesh side pocket of his duffle bag was his bible. And when they were told to get their stuff because the van was waiting to take them to the airport it was still there, so proud of him. I know how you felt with the first and second ones going. I am a bit more relaxed but I just wish there was a Coastie4Moms site! You all really helped me keep my sanity through Navy BC at a time that was so rough for me (I had my mini stroke right before Matt left for BC) funny cause now his wife keeps saying to me, he will be alright, right? I keep telling her it's just eight weeks and he will be fine. Anyway, Marc seems to know you all since you guys are all I talk about and Mary he knows you since he met you at the PIR. Oh and Mary who knows maybe we will see him on DC!

By the way if you all are interested go to You Tube and then to "it's just eight weeks" they have each week starting from week 1 to week 8 with week 9 I think is graduation. Just make sure you view the clips from "thecoastguardchannel". Kind of intense but I am sure our sailors went through the same thing!
