~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.
~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.
~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.
~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Grayce, Your SR won't need a dictionary or a two year calendar while in BC, and both of those things he would probably not be allowed to keep.
The only thing you should be sending your son is letters. They can receive a small bible and further into training they can receive their contacts, and for the females basic make-up. Cards are also fine to send, but no glitter of any kind (it's messy), and absolutely no musical cards.
Dianne Thank you for such valuable information!!! Never did I even think about him just wanting to chill and just take it easy. Here I am thinking we should plan all this stuff and be like "oh look what we are doing today" when really, all he might want is down time! Thank you! I will definitely leave it up to him. In fact, I might make a questionaire to send with his next letter asking him to circle something he would like to do and "Chill out with us" will definitely be an option!!
Richie'sMom: In the local area where you will be, there is nice mall - Gurnee Mall (a popular hangout for sailors from the A School too), movie theaters are there too. There is a Six Flags nearby, but I believe it will be closed for the season when you are there??? Some like to take the train (station right next to RTC) into Chicago. I understand you can take a water taxi or a bus over to Navy Pier from the Chicago station. There is tons to see in Chicago....an Aquarium, Sears Tower, etc.....you can google "things to see in Chicago" and check that out. The train ticket is pretty cheap....sailors get the military discount. I believe someone said it is only $7 for a ticket? For those staying through the weekend, I believe you can buy a weekend pass for an even cheaper-per-day rate.
Having said that, you may want your sailor to make the call on what to do. Some of them are very tired....and may just want to hang out in your hotel room, take a LONG SHOWER ALONE for the first time in a long time, catch up on their laptops/phones (bring them!), etc. So....make a list and see how it goes!
Emotional rollercoasters for the ladies on here are very common and expected! So just know you are not alone! :-)
My oldest (leaving for Marine Boot Camp in Nov) has been helping me with Zac's stuff. He doesn't understand why I'm emotional, and my husband is trying to understand but it's great to see here that I'm not having a breakdown, I'm just experiencing exactly what all the SR moms are!! LOL
I agree. When I was packing up his room the weekend after he left for BC, his two best friends were there helping me. It was nice. we took our time packing his stuff and just talked about him...things we'd pick up sometimes generated a "remember when" story. We laughed, they saw me cry...It was good to have them there.
Richie's mom: I'm going through almost the same, new job, moving, etc. Some days I'm ok, but others (this morning) I'm overwhelmed and just have a hard time keeping it together to do my job. I keep telling myself that it will all be ok, but going into his room and packing his stuff is soooo hard.
