FTLW - I did notice that "unless" and I am still booking through Sunday....LOL. I'm not taking any chances. I figured the same thing as you - when will I ever visit Chicago again. Might as well make a mini vacation out of it.
I'M WALKING ON AIR RIGHT NOW!!!!
Invisible 12 - You lucky dog....so happy that you were able to speak with your son!
Thanks for the info on the time with our SR's. I wasn't sure whether or not to book flights through Friday, Saturday or Sunday (I was being really hopeful).
Good Morning All, in case you were wondering and hoping (as I was) that we'd get an extra day with our recruits on Friday 11/11 - RTC just confirmed that "Holiday or not, recruits going out of state for A School will fly out on Friday, Nov. 11 unless there is an issue with ticket availability or their orders."
Not the answer I wanted but I expected it.
On another note - My son called me this morning with questions for security clearance. YIIIPPPPPPPEEEEE !!!!!!! It was so great to hear his voice. He sounded perfectly normal, not tired, not aggravated, nothing. He said he's doing fine and that they started training. He said the RDCs do yell alot but not too bad. He didn't need to get his wisdom teeth pulled and they haven't started to get mail yet. I told him that when he does he's going to have like 100 letters. He said "Mom, I have no room for stuff. I have a tiny little drawer." I told him that I sent a larger envelope for him to put all his letters in and he can put that in his drawer. He said "ok." I told him I loved him and that we miss him and he said I love you too.
SOOOOO HAPPPY.....!!!!
I understand, Zenda, you not watching it. But there is something so much more special when it is "your" sailor that is in the PIR. No matter what I saw before my son's PIR, didn't matter...when that door opened and his division started to walk in...well, I lost it.
But, I totally understand you wanting to wait until PIR to experience the full impact! I was a bumbling teary wreck during the entire ceremony...just emotions all coming to a head!
If this is any consolation to you all...when you see your new sailors at PIR, you will be so amazed at the positive changes in them. No matter how mature and wonderful they were when they left for bc, they will be even moreso after bootcamp.
I look at the process like this: They arrive there and immediately go into a "breakdown" process. This is because you have SRs coming from all over, different ages, from different backgrounds, experiences, etc....somehow, the RDCs must make them a "team." The only way to do that is to break them down and then build them back up. The breakdown process is --of course-- difficult for them...but for you all too. You may get negative sounding letters...you may get some tears in a phone call...all heart wrenching for our us. But...try to hang in there...because just a few weeks later, you will get letters/calls full of excitement in anticipation of becoming sailors....you will feel so proud of your almost-sailors...you will look at their RDCs on PIR day with respect for what they have done with your sailors. You will never feel more proud of your new sailor than you will on PIR day. There is just nothing quite like that moment when they march in....as a division, in formation...and you watch in awe.
I am posting a video here taken by the mom of a SR from the 8/12/11 PIR group...whose business is production work...and I think you might get a "feel" for what awaits you with your SR. Focus on this...pray often for your sailor...allow the Lord to watch over him/her as He always does...pray for their RDCs as well...and look forward to seeing your new sailors in just a few weeks!
Here's the video:
Enjoy!
