I wasn't able to see my son swear in but my parents were able to attend :)

I have to laugh at how every kid is different.  I asked my daughter if she wanted us to come to MEPS and the airport - and she said - well, duh...of course.  So we did.  No tears or sadness, just lots of well wishing.  I wonder how much of the decision is a son/daughter thing as many sons seem to say no and I've seen other mom's of daughters who have said yes.

I had planned to watch my son swear in, but the recruiters told me it is usually harder on the recruits and the parents for goodbyes, as it might be crowded/rushed/confusing.  My son agreed that it would probably be easier on him to have a relaxed goodbye at the recruiter's office, and make the rest of the journey just his.  He didn't want to have to worry about us in the confusion at MEPS.

I didnt watch my son get sworn in either. he didnt offer so I figured it was a personal thing. We did make it to the hotel and for the rest of my life I will remember him walking through the hotel doors alone. I cried the whole way home and most of the next day.

Thanks diannep.  I would never post the names publicly.  Big NO NO.  I can definitely understand the older kids not wanting anyone there and I hope I did not offend you.  It was just uncomfortable when we were in the room watching the swearing in. The officer addressed us as the parents of my son and the other kids looked at us.  It was a fairly small room and it just felt funny.

For those who find out you have recruits in the 952 DIV be sure and ask them if they are a performer. If they are in band, choir, or drill team you can make friends with a couple of PIR groups who have PIR the 2 weeks before your and ask them if they will take pics and come back and post them for you. If so there is a very good chance you may get to see your soon to be Sailor performing for a couple other PIR's :-) And we all know pictures are worth a 1000 words and can do your heart good :-D

My son is on Ship 03, Div. 367.  His box arrived but no letter yet.  His recruiter was nice enough to give me his address so I have been able to send a few letters thus far.  I can not wait to hear from him!

Invisible:  My son would not allow us to go with him to MEPS on the day he shipped out.  So he would have been one of the ones with no one there!    But...his choice.  He wouldn't even let us go into the hotel with him the night before he left...I never even met his recruiter (from a different county since he lived there at the time).  He wanted me totally out of the process...maybe because he was 23 at the time and had lived on his own for a while.

But after reading all of the posts on this site over the past almost 2 yrs, I realize how much we missed by doing that!  But again..his choice.  I think he thought it would be too hard to say "goodbye" there...he just wanted that part over with. He had to come to Miami for testing, etc when he enlisted and I wanted to go over and watch him be sworn in.  He asked if I could, and was hazed a bit for wanting "mommy" there.  So...no way would he allow me to come!  Again, probably because he was older.  I know some who ship out are only 17.

Sending mail to those not getting mail is a wonderful thing. I actually stored some letters on my computer and would then "tweak" them for a new recruit.  Saved time and allowed me to write more letters.  I actually had a few that wrote back...one girl even after she arrived at A School!  So it is a great thing to do.  Just remember not to post the info on here...You can either send "Message to Group" or post that you have the info for others to get.  But the SRs so appreciate it.  Some ladies send an "extra" letter in their letter for their recruit to give out to someone not getting mail.  However, it is always better to write them inidividually so that their name is called out for mail call!

sjtina, that was so nice of you.  I asked my son in one of my letters to let me know if there's anyone that doesn't get mail. If he sends me any names I'll put a message on here and see if someone would like to volunteer to send some letters.  It breaks my heart to think of these kids watching everyone around them getting mail and there's nothing for them.  It's horrible.  I felt terrible when I went to MEPS to watch my son take the oath and there were 5 others kids with him and no one was there for them.  It was sad.
Comment by sjtina on September 21, 2011 at 10:05am

Invisible don't woory he will get the letters.

I remember my son telling me that they call the names out in front of everyone and you would jump up to get your mail and jump back into your bunk and start reading, he said it was sad when they didnt call your name. So I recruited my facebook friends to write. I gave them his address in a personal message of course. That kept him busy for awhile.
