Miss you guys.  Still dealing with a mom who had emergency surgery (rescue truck...I found her) and my fully demented Dad at home..with no help but what Mom gave him!  UGH!  I have been after her forever to get help...now it is all on me...running ragged but hoping to be back on here soon...because I truly miss Navy4Moms!

According to my daughter's letter our recruits should be in Week 3 this week.  Below is what they should be doing according to the info on the Navydep website:

3-1 Day
- Hair cuts again. Males get shaven (Navy Style), and females whose hair falls below the bottom edge of the collar get another haircut. You pay for it, so it's you. I'd say females cut it short before coming!
----------------------------
3-2 Day
- Classifications - Ratings if you are Nuke or AECF or do not have a specific rating only. You will list the order of what you rating you want etc. You should find out the following week what the Navy decideds to give you. (Note: this is only for people in Nuke, AECF, or do not have a rating when coming in).
----------------------------
3-3 Day
- Study Time
- Weapons computer based training. You complete the course and print out the certificate. You must score 100%.
----------------------------
3-4 Day
- Seamanship Basic Skills class
---------------------------
3-5 Day
- Marlinspike. You get to practice the seamanship skills learned the day before. Important to know all roles because they will come in handy for Battle Stations.

Ladies it is extremely normal for the divisions to take 3 to 4 weeks to start coming together.  Whether it is just a few who are not pulling their weight, or more than a few, trust us, they will turn themselves around the 4th week.  Your SR's are working very hard, probably the hardest they have ever had too, and like others have said, the best thing you can do is encourage them and tell them how proud you are of them.   My own son's division had 3 or 4 individuals for about 4 to 5 weeks were constanty getting into trouble.  Their entire division was getting IT'd all the time, but guess what?  My son's division was the division that won Hall of Fame.  Those "slacker's" pulled it all together in the end and it will happen with your loved one's division as well. Try not to worry.  One other thing that I always tried to remember and would also like to pass on, was that by the time I received the letter that my SR wrote to me, the worries and concerns that he may have had could have passed by then,   If they wrote their letter on Sunday and you received the letter on Thursday, a lot could happen between that time.  Things could be a lot better and most likely are better in those few days.

I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but I don't think any one of us meant to berate any of these kids or make any negative assumptions in any way.  Of course we understand and want to encourage all of them. But I think what it is is that we're all very "on edge" right now, so worried about our own, that to think of anyone or anything making life right now any more difficult than it is, just adds to our sorrow.  It's certainly nothing personal and all the recruits need our love and support.  This is just a tough time for all of them and us.  Lets all kiss and make up.  There's no hard feeling towards any of the recruits who are having a hard time.  I hope you all agree.

Here's hoping to a better day, some letters and some phone calls !!!!!!

I think the recruits will get it together.  I can't imagine that it's uncommon to have a messy phase at the beginning when they all learn how to handle themselves.  These kids are under a lot of stress and are going through an enormous change.  Let's give them the benefit of the doubt, and encourage them all to hang in there and do their best.  The RDCs know what they're doing; they'll get them there.

I agree that a lot of the new recruits are in for a rude awakening, and we need to encourage them, but I don't think age is a factor at all. I think it is more of being more disciplined and higher expectations then what they are used to. We need to encourage them instead of berate them for their actions. They will get enough of that at boot camp. I agree with Jimbo..they will all come together as a team in the next few weeks and hopefully be the best ones there :)

Thanks Jimbo!
Comment by Jimbo on October 3, 2011 at 10:13pm
Not to worry. Some of these kids get on board sooner than others. There are almost 100 different levels of maturity on each ship and it's still early based on the letters. Some fight the system because that's just who they are but they will come around or get sent back. This is completely typical so send encouraging words and tell your recruit to do his or her best.
