Reflections of a Blackshoe

Reflections of a Blackshoe by VAdm Harold Koenig, USN

I like the Navy.

I like standing on the bridge wing at sunrise with salt

spray in my face and clean ocean winds whipping in from the four

quarters of the globe -the ship beneath me feeling like a living thing

as her engines drive her through the sea.

I like the sounds of the Navy - the pierc ing trill of the

boatswains pipe, the syncopated clangor of the ship's bell on… Continue

What about New Year’s resolutions? I’ll share mine… next year I am going to…. make… Continue

Gifts

Every mom has given us the gift of their child serving our great country. A gift of pride, of tears, of loneliness, of sacrifice, a gift we all share and cherish. The wives and husbands and children, the aunts and uncles and grandparents, the girlfriends and boyfriends and fiances, all too have given the gift of supporting their service member. A gift of the heart. I thank you all for that gift.

Our sailors give of the gift of liberty, of our rights as citizens, of freedom to speak… Continue

My FIRST EVER NavyForMoms Meet and Greet!!

Saturday morning and I was a little nervous about this first meeting and wondered how well it would go. Would everyone that had RSVP-ed for the breakfast Meet & Greet show up? And if so, how friendly would they all be? And, more importantly, would Elle, the new Navy For Moms Admin and my "surprise" special guest be able to make it with her busy schedule? Could we plan another get together?

The answers? Yes, very friendly, yes and yes. Everyone who had RSVP-ed showed up at… Continue

Christmas in the Navy ... The Great Christmas Road Trip

This is in memory of my brother, who just passed away yesterday.

I had spent my first Christmas in the Navy in bootcamp. We did get to open cards and the chow hall served a nice feast. Pretty boring day. However, my next Christmas was in Great Lakes while I was still in A school. I was a petty officer third class by then; this is when the ET schools awarded the crow at ten weeks. I decide to fly home for Christmas. I knew my parents weren't there, Dad was still working in Saudi and… Continue

ok, first Holiday in the bag...

Well, Jay left for boot Tuesday before Thanksgiving. I received the 2 second phone call at 2:30 am when he hit Great Lakes - and when I woke up in the morning, I wasn't sure if I had dreamt the call or if it actually occurred.

Friends had us over on Thanksgiving so that we weren't home alone (one daughter is in NY, the other is in another town here in FL). My sister decided we should have a family Thanksgiving on Saturday... all was well until I realized I had set an "extra" place at… Continue

Thanksgiving at Goose Creek, Nukes

We had 13 sailors show up for our Thanksgiving dinner 2008! They started arriving around noon, and we finally said goodnight at 10 pm. (The parents were ready for bed!)
It was the usual turkey, ham, potatoes, corn, stuffing, and family creamed onions. However, to share your sailor's time was precious.
Thanks for the memories and thanks to the villas for a great place to stay.

Holiday Question for our Maryland, Virginia, and DC Moms

Hi Moms-

Just wondering if you or any other local N4M's are planning on hosting a Sailor for the holidays, or planning on ‘giving back’ in other ways in your hometown. If so, Elle S. and I would love to talk to you! Please let us know what you are up to! :) CC

Anchors Aweigh, my moms, Anchors Aweigh!

Dear Members:

My husband J and I are relocating to Chicago in a few days. My last day on the site will be tomorrow 12/2/2008. Your new admin will be Elle. I’ve been transitioning her for the last couple of weeks. The rules and the site are the same. The only difference is you are talking to her instead of me. :D Please welcome, be patient, help, and work with her as she continues to transition in to the admin role.

I can’t believe that almost 10 months ago I was asked to… Continue

Adopted a Sailor

Hi,

Has anyone out there heard about Adopted a Sailor? Does anyone have a web site to learn more information about this. My son was telling me about this and I went on line and could not find the web site. I live very close to Great Lakes and would love to help out with some of the men and women who can not get home during the holidays, let me know!

Thanks,
Debbie

The Difference Between the Air Force and the Navy

In the Air Force, if it isn't written you can do something, then you can't. In the Navy, if it isn't written that you can't, then you can.

A great gift to give...

red cross Pictures, Images and Photos

As the holiday season approaches us, the need for blood donation always increases. Perhaps one of the best gifts we can give this year is to donate blood.

To learn more blood donation opportunities, visit www.givelife.org or

call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543).

We all expect blood to be there for us, but barely a fraction of those who can give do. Yet sooner or later,… Continue

Who do you fight with for the wishbone?

thanksgiving or happy thanksgiving Pictures, Images and Photos

Yes, the reality of our sailor not being home for Thanksgiving hit our daughter today. She wanted to know WHO she was going to fight with on the wishbone? Our son and daughter enjoyed this tradition for years, so do we save the wishbone until he returns home again…

LEAVING ON THE 18TH

My son left on November 18th, he did not want my husband or I to be home when he left, so away he went, he called Wednesday night and told us he was at Great Lakes and tired, he wanted to talk to his dad and by the time his father got to the phone he had to go, we felt bad we really did not get to talk with him. So Friday came and my daughter came in from school and I thought we would have a pretty good weekend and then Friday night a box came, we were trying to figure out what we had ordered,… Continue
