jenn:  When they call liberty, you will stampede (yep, that is really what it is!) from the stands and find your sailors in there.  Quick hugs, pictures, and they will clear the hall within about 10 minutes.  The sailors will return to their ships to get pictures, etc....this may take 20-45 minutes.  You plan to meet them somewhere on base...usually by the NEX.  You are not allowed back to where their ships are (scary looking sailors will stop you!  :-)  ).  Once your sailor returns from his/her ship, you are free to leave the base with your sailor.  UNLESS...

you have a sailor moving over to GL A School base.  In that case, they do this right after PIR.  You will have a short time to visit with them when liberty is called, and then they are bussed over there.  You leave RTC but make sure your sailor has a phone card to call you when done.  The move can take 3-4 hours.  Once he/she calls, you pick your sailor up at A School base (next to RTC) and will have liberty until a certain time that night (your sailor will know).  You will also then have weekend daytime liberty with your sailor...so that is a perk of those staying at GL for A School!

I don't know what we are doing on Friday after PIR.. I am most likely leaving Saturday.  I have a question about something that I'm unclear about.  Once they call liberty after PIR, are the Sailors allowed to leave the building with us, or do we leave, and meet them elsewhere? If there is lag time, is there a place I can maybe go with my son to wait?

Liz - here's something another Navy mom posted to my FB recently -

There's the museum's, shedd aquarium, baseball, michigan ave, navy pier, espn zone, lincoln park zoo, sears tower, free trolleys to certain places, millenim park, lots of places to eat.....hard rock, rainforest cafe......etc. Closer to GL is great america, gurnee mills mall and again lots of places to eat and hang out.

Hope this helps!

Hi ladies! I'm sorry I haven't been on lately - yes, Dianne, I was away for the w/e - two nights at the casino and a Boston Red Sox game yesterday that went 17 innings! Great birthday w/e with the hubby - now I'm ready to see my SR! PIR in less than 3 weeks. Liz - we want to go to the White Sox game on Sat if the SR can go. I've only been to Chicago once but really enjoyed it - I went in early May and the flowers were blooming, it was beautiful! Maybe go up to the top of the Sears tower? There was also a free shuttle like trolley that went all over the city. Hope that's still there.

Lala - I know what you mean about thanking the service men/women. I've been doing that for years to anyone I see in uniform - or wearing one of those veteran branch baseball caps. I feel we can't thank them enough for our freedom! I can't believe people will soon be thanking my son for the same thing = so proud!

Hello everyone! I received a phone call from my son on Friday, and it was wonderful!! We were right smack in the midst of preparing for his sister's bridal shower that was Saturday...but I dropped everything and lunged for the phone when I saw "847" pop up!! He sounded so good...I can't wait to see him on the 25th! It is rainy here in Michigan today...so the memory of his call is my sunshine. :-)

Can anyone throw out some ideas for PIR weekend besides baseball and Great Adventure. Heading to Navy Pier Saturday but plan on being there all weekend even is Ash flies out early Saturday. Anything anyone has heard about that would be neat to see?go to?

Ok, hoping to see some activity on this page today!  Maybe all of you were gone for the weekend?  Remember, if you are hanging out in your discussion groups above, be sure to be checking this main page too.  We N4Moms veterans will be answering questions/posting info on this main page.  We don't have time to cruise through the discussions too often...we are on 6-7 PIR groups at a time so there isn't much time to do that.

Good morning all!

Hope you are all having a great weekend.  I missed the Zombie race, because my sons baseball game was scheduled for today last minute.  I couldn't tell him he wouldn't be able to play, so my plans were cancelled.  Hoping for a call today!!
