I have bumped up all the PIR info Discussions up above and added:
Metra info
Navy Pier info
Linden - Prayers for a speedy and full recovery...bummer on the setback...but he can do it! See you in your new PIR group.
For A Schoolers in GL - remember that if you take a parking pass with you, you can drop them off right at their "ship" on the GL base after liberty. They don't have to walk back. You can't go get them because they have to be in the car with you (with their military ID) to pass through the gate so you will have to meet them at the visitor's center outside the gate.
Shawn's mom2 - Prayers for your father on his surgery!
So sorrry for the Recruit sent home after BS with an injury...dang that sucks.
txbabydocmom - I am so sorry that the chances for your son are not good. I am glad he did everything he could and that you have had so much communication...I am sure that that has helped. I wish him the best in whatever he does in ife! Great pic!
Leaving tomorrow for GL, cant hardly stand it! Busy getting ready tho...and waiting for that final call from my Sailor Girl...for what she needs in the way of clothes..she had packed an "airport" bag before she left, but I took half of it out.. Her best request was "butterscotch brownies". LOL!! Which I had to go to my moms and make, as she is the expert for those!!! LOL!!! she was thrilled to be included as she is not going... I called southwest yesterday to make sure that I could bring them in my carry on....Yes!!! My hubby, bf and gma are going....She did tell me that her orders are for SA June 11 or 12th...too bad they cant have more time for liberty this weekend...oh well We are going to the
Ramada Meet n Greet and will try to get over to Sarge's. Good luck to you
txtbabydocmom, thanks for your support janusu831 and everyone else. this site has been so great...I know I will need a box of tissues!!! maybe two!LOL! did see that they went to recruit heaven on Sat....I think as far as things to do, we are just going to play it by ear and let her come to hotel and relax and whatever. she will want some bf time...(I don't want to share!!!) LOL!I would like to sight see chicago, but might be too much...Good luck to all this Friday~!~~~
I will be wearing a Flag sweater that my Mom gave me!!! so hope I dont stand out too much!!! ha ha!! take care all!
cindyship - Thank you for the info from Sarge!
We support him and completely agree that he does go above and beyond the call of duty...have had many reports of those extra acts of service.
I do agree with diannep though...we only had 7 Divisons in our PIR and the lower stands were almost filled whenI got there around 7:30. I was at the Navy Lodge and when I got in the line of cars I was...hmmmm...in between the Illinois Gate entrance (closed for PIR) and the Ohio Street. Ohio is what you turn in on for Gate 8 for PIR. I left Navy lodge around 7 AM...parked in the Parking Garage...walked right into the Visitors Center and got in the line for Security..which moves right along.
And as far as orders...my experience was that my son recieved his by at least the Tuesday before PIR as his Liberty had changed. We had a Thursday PIR as it was Memorial Day weekend...so he flew out on Sunday instead of Friday...and yes, this alll changed two days before PIR while I was flying out! I had booked through until late Sunday though, based on the wonderful advice on here from the veteran moms!
Chicago could be rough on PIR day like he says...they are pooped and only have the one day to see their family! BUT some want to go! LOL Those with GL's "A" schoolers...they of course have more time to do so on the weekend. Lots to see downtown! Some of the Musuems are free to Military. The METRA is right across from Gate 8 like diannep says so if it gets back at just the right time then you're good to go! I have a Discussion I'll post with Metra info.
Liberty times for return to RTC can vary...your Sailor will be given a time to return (my sons was 8 PM on PIR day...he was at RTC for the extra days of Liberty before shipping out to Corry Station on Sunday.)...they will most likely want to be back an hour before that time because on time...is late.
The Ships are quite a walk from the Gate if you drop off there...and still a distance from the Parking Garage or Chapel Parking Lot ( I was directed to drop off at the Chapel Parking on PIR evening and then the Parking Garage all other days). I have a map and will post if I have not. My son was told that he was not allowed to run or even double-time it...only walk. Late...is not good.
Good morning everyone. I echo what Diannep said about getting to PIR at 7ish. You want to get the best seat and there is so much excitement in the air that you won't want to miss anything.
We drove to Navy Pier in Chicago and had a great time. My son wanted to eat at Bubba Gumps and see the sites. I suggest you just play it by ear depending on what your sailor wants to do but have some things planned in case they want to venture out.
