OPSEC, OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance. Please take the time
to read the OPSEC and Community Guidelines. A quick note here: Last Names of Sailors/Recruits  are not allowed on this site. If it is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended. First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture.

Welcome to all those who have joined in the past couple of days.
Also a huge thank you to the veteran moms who are answering our questions. You are such a font of information and I truly appreciate it.

Wow, that is definitely different. I wonder if they all waited until Monday or if some went on Friday and others on Monday.

Unless something has changed that I am unaware of those who have A-school in Great Lakes will spend a few minutes with their family right after PIR then they go back to their rack and pack up and move to the new base across the street. About 4-5 hours later they call you to come to the new base to pick them up and then you drop them off that evening and pick them back up the next morning. I don't think this has changed but if it has someone please let me know.

About how long after they arrive before recruits start receiving mail?

jansu831 thanks for the info, I have been reading about Sarge...Trisha...I googled a map but she may have GPS on her cell phone too. I will be sure and let her know about the quarters...how much are tolls usually? we don't have those here in the desert ;)

This is a lively group - you are all busy planning your trip to PIR already!  We stayed at Spring Hill Suites and it was great.  The rooms were really nice and I think we paid about $70 per night (our room could sleep 6) and had a fabulous free breakfast.  Your sailors will not be able to spend the night with you so don't worry about trying to make accommodations that include them.

Comment by jansu831 on April 17, 2012 at 1:24pm

Griffsma - call SARGE AT 847-212-0246 and he will be there to get you.  He has the meet and greet and will have more information than you can possible absorb!  LOL  He is very reasonable and you don't have to do anything but ride.  He also tries to coordinate with others coming in so you get better rates.  This is good information for anyone needing transportation of any kind during PIR weekend.  Call early to get on his schedule - he is very accommodating!

I am unsure of taking a train from the airport. If I remember correctly you have to take a cab to the train station and then can take a train to Great Lakes. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Comment by Riverlady ship 13 div 181 on April 17, 2012 at 12:43pm

Trisha, could I take a train from the airport to the base? I will be arriving Sat morn and my son's girlfriend will have a rental car but I am sure she will want to spend time with him and I don't want her to have to drive to the airport and back to get me at 6 am. I don't really know the distance or the traffic situation. So if there is a way I can get to them on my own without renting a car I would love to know. She and I will depart the same day so getting back to the airport will not be a problem.
