My son's girlfriend and I are going to share a room. Of course she will be there for PIR and I have to come the day after. We are both on shoestring budget and she found great rates at a place called the Red Carpet. It is a mile away from RTC but does offer the shuttle. I am hoping she will attend Sarge's meet and greet although she said there is one at a place called Flannigan's that is right next door to our hotel.

TJsMom:  Residence Inn, Springhill Suites, and Courtyard are all in the same area....Courtyard is older (unless they renovated?) but the other two are great.  Residence has the larger suites (2 bdrm 2 bth) in addition to studios...all with full kitchens.  All 3 hotels have PIR shuttle service...Residence has a free hot buffet breakfast daily, served early on PIR Day, is pet friendly!!!.  We stayed there....really liked it.  All are Marriotts as you probably already know!  They are all in the vicinity of Sarge's Meet and Greet (see Meet N Greet icon up above to learn about them).  Springhill Suites and Courtyard are right next to the big WalMart shopping center that has some restaurants, etc. there.  Residence is a little closer to RTC, just up the street.

Yes, ctav, totally agree with Lala's suggestion for you all.  We have read too many stories on here of people who booked their flights back on Saturday, only to realize last minute that their sailors had longer in GL--had to say goodbye to them when they still had liberty.  :-(  Most DO ship out on Sat. if having A School outside of GL, but occasionally, they may ship out on Sunday.  You can always sightsee in Chicago or Wisconsin (you are very close to the state line in GL) after your sailor leaves if they do leave on Sat---remember you will get airport visit time with them too...which is wonderful---you meet them out there and get an airlines gate pass to wait with them until their plane leaves.

We love helping :-) The first 2-3 weeks are the hardest for them and for you. P-days are the worst. The first letters home can be hard to read. They may be homesick and wondering if they made the right decision. But it will get better as the time goes by. The absolutely live for mail call even if they said you don't need to write everyday. They will quickly change their mind and be begging for more letters. Hearing their name called for mail is like Christmas and they say the letters are what gets them through the next day. So those pens flowing and write every day if you can. Get family and friends to write as well just be sure and tell them no packages or food is allowed and no musical cards.  I wouldn't post the address on their facebook page because you never know who they have as friends and someone may think it is funny to send something to get them in trouble. If you run out of things to write about we all have lots of ideas :-)

This site has been amazing. I can't even begin to tell you all how much you have really helped me through the last 2 weeks. I thought because I'd been through basic and knew most of what he's be going through that I'd be ok. Boy was I wrong. You all have really helped and I just wanted to say thanks

If her A-school is in great Lakes you definitely want to stay up there for the weekend. If A-school is somewhere else most of them will fly out sometime on Saturday. There is no way to know what time her flight will be until you get to PIR so make your flight as late as possible or wait until Sunday if you can. There is always a chance that there may not be enough flights available and they may not fly out until late Sat afternoon, Sunday, or sometimes even on Monday. So if you can swing it we suggest you stay until late Sunday if possible.

Thanks dianne.  Got the letter today and her PIR will be on 6/8.  I haven't read the letter from front to back but there was a part about the SR getting leave on that Friday and shipping out the next day.  From the comments, it sounds like some SRs are available through Sunday so how do you decide when to leave?

Comment by Twinsmom on April 16, 2012 at 8:40pm

Thanks, Trisha and Jansu!  I love the idea of staying till Sunday "just in case".  You're right, it would be horrible to have to catch a plane if he was still around to visit!  Thanks for the info!
