Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Great ideas! My son had a watch when he left and it didn't come back in the "box" so should I assume it's ok? Also I bought one of the challenge coins on eBay and I think it's a nice keepsake. I really love "talking" to you all- as soon as I get home I run to read all these posts! Keep them coming...

Hi Saratoga - oh a camera would be great for your SR - my SR already has a really nice one I bought her for Christmas a couple of years back - she is an amature photographer!! :o)
I found a really nice women's Navy watch on overstock.com for $270 or something. Real pretty for a big ole black watch. LOL It has a blue face. I'll look around though - and we'll see. And I'll see what Costco has. Thanks for the tips!
The coins I'm looking at are on Ebay and are really nice - there's 2: one is the "ship" she's on now at bootcamp and says Recruit Training Command around it and the other is one that just says US Navy - cool looking for sure.

Samis Mom, Absolutely true. I definitely want to get the coin too. They are very meaningful. I am leaning toward a camera. But I haven't priced any out yet. Sorry, the Seiko I mentioned was a men's design. I'm sure there are lots more that would more affordable. 250-300 is a lot

Well, in doing a little research via the Internet, looks like those watches run, on average, $250-$300. Maybe she'll want to go in on it with me. Someone said somewhere that just getting there was a gift in itself - that's true from where we'll be coming from Northern California - the airline tickets alone are $1200. that's not including the car and hotel and food etc. Sigh. Oh well. I'll get the coins for now.

Thanks Diannep!! That's actually perfect because she had said that was something she wanted before she left for BC. Do you think she can pick it out with me? Or will there be time? I understand that after PIR she has to go check in and move over to her A school there in GL. Is that immediately following PIR or do we get some time with her first? I know we'll get time after but how late is the NEX open, do you know?
I also wonder and if anyone has any idea please let me know, what kind of money we're talking about for the watches? THANKS!!!
