OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance. Please take the time
to read the OPSEC and Community Guidelines. A quick note here: Last Names of Sailors/Recruits are not allowed on this site. If it is in your username you will need to change your username. If yours is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended. First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

If it were my son, he'd love the cupcakes. But, that's because there's this sweet/weird tradition on his dad's side of the family - for every birthday, his dad's grandma bakes a cake for the birthday boy to take to work and share with everyone. She's been doing it for four generations now, starting with her husband, all the way through my son. They get over that embarrassment associated with birthdays/cake/etc real quick in that family.  However, for normal people... it may not be the way to go.

Hi ladies! I agree with Angie! Balloons. Roll up different denominations of money and stick a bill in each balloon. Blow them up, tie em off and stick them in a box!

Dauber Mom I say neither...if he was at his first command I would say the edible arrangements because things would be different. Send him a card and let him know y'all will celebrate when he gets home!!! School environment is totally different. Now if it was your daughter it would be different story...just my opinion
Do a Figi's gift basket without the balloms!!!

IDK daubersmom, I think great idea on both but I think my son what just die if I did something like that. If we were at home around family he would love edible treats or cupcakes but around his shipmates may not be a good idea. Maybe throw in a bunch of hs fav things in a care pkg and send It to him.

Hi all,

Question, my sailor is turning 19 on Oct 19, first birthday alone.. :(  thinking of sending either an "edible arrangment" or trying to contact a local bakery and having some cupcakes delivered or him to share.. any thoughts on either one?

I got to talk to my son yesterday. He passed his pepper spray test. He said it was the worst thing he's ever gone through. He won't have to go through the whole spraying in the face again. If he needs to get recertified he just has to wipe a rag soaked in pepper spray across his forehead and eyes. Still sounds painful.

He's really enjoying himself in San Antonio. He says it's an airshow everyday. He put the phone out so I could hear the F16's fly by. He sounds sooo happy. A little over a month and he'll be home for a while.

Hope everyone is doing well. Missing hearing from all of you.

My son called while I was on the way to the grocery store last night. I pulled over and he was chatty Cathy. Glad my husband had fallen asleep or he would have wondered why it took me so long to "run" to the store and back! He is so excited to get out to "the fleet". He's getting a couple of weeks leave before he goes so we'll get to have him at home for a few days, yeah! It is soooooooo nice to be able to reach them fairly easily. Especially since I know that it won't be that easy once he is on a ship and out to sea. Hope everybody is having an easier time with thier SRs now that BC is over.

I got to talk to my son for an hour yesterday, and the best part is - HE called ME! It was really nice.

How is everyone else doing?

Comment by Momof2sailors on October 3, 2012 at 9:20am
