OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance. Please take the time
to read the OPSEC and Community Guidelines. A quick note here: Last Names of Sailors/Recruits are not allowed on this site. If it is in your username you will need to change your username. If yours is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended. First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Lynda....The weather is wonderful here....We live North of Austin so we are not too far from where your son is. In fact my husband hauls modular/mobile homes and goes on the Ft. Sam Houston base quite a bit. Just because of the climate changes over the weekend I ended up coming back home with a sinus cold. It did get a bit chilli while we were there. We usually have mild winters..in fact last winter was so mild that I never even had to get my coat out.

Im giggling reading these posts. Mine bought a laptop and a wireless aircard from verizon (at least that what it sounds like) My first question was, was there a contract? I think this is harder than boot camp... Letting go and not being able to guide them in this.

Just was texting my son about all the info about tv's and xboxes. I could see him ding that. He hasn't started his a school yet. Just misc. things they are going over. He did say he's seen alot of jets taking off and got to see a sand tornado today.

Wishing we were having his Texas weather here in Chicago. It's cold and windy. May have to put heat on tonight. Yuck

LOL maboltship!

A TV & an XBox were the first 2 things my Sailor bought too!  My husband said, "There goes A School!!"  But he is doing very well & he's very happy.  He's also there with 3 others in his boot camp division who are keeping him in line:)

Thank you for the info.  I was wondering about that.  I think my son did a lay away for at least the TV.  Maybe he could get his money back.  I will try to talk to him tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks for the info MLDD...my son is thinking about buying a TV..I have already told him that I didn't think it was a good idea because of when he is done with A school then he will have to ship it either home or to his next destination. We told him that we would ship his tv to him if he wanted it but was afraid after the cost that he could probably just buy another but also we are afraid that it would get damaged in shipping. I think he has decided not to worry about as there is a TV at the USO and he has netflix on his phone.

Daubersmom...thanks for the heads up about the over payment. I am fixing to skype with my son so I will ask him to check his bank account to make sure that he hasn't received more than what he should have.

We skyped earlier and I loved being able to see him while I was talking to him. Though he couldn't be still long enough for me to get a good look at him. He was in the middle of changing clothes. I can't believe how clean his room is...not that he ever had a real messy room at home but it was never that neat.

Mabolt, when we were in GL riding around with Sarge he got a call from a mom whose son was finishing up school at GL and about to head to the fleet. She was concerned because he did the same thing (bought a tv and desk top computer) and she was wondering how they would ship. Sarge said its really hard and very expensive to ship tv's. He said that most sailor's just sell them at a greatly reduced price. He was going to help the sailor find out where to advertise them. He suggested that I tell my sailor that if she wants a tv at A school to find the "community Board" and see if people are selling their stuff. Too late for your son, but maybe others will want to pass on the info! Almost makes me wish they were still in BC where they couldn't spend money! Lol

daubersmom, Its my son's first job also.  He cut my father-in-laws lawn and that's about it. Glad to hear he is not the only one.  As soon as he got to A school, he bought a TV and a X-box.  I asked him how are you going to get that to C school? He said, I'll ship it...He will need to learn how to handle his money for sure!

Angie, great advice.. my son as never paid for anything, this is his first job, we did make him do things around the house and paid him an allowance in which he was responsible for putting gas in his car.. we did get a joint account before he left but when he got to BC he opened his own acct.. he called last night, said they were told that they were paid an extra 500.00 and it will be taken back in 60 days.  He said he isnt spending any more money, except to eat.. He knows what it means to be responsible with money, we taught him about that.. but I will still keep an eye on his finances...
