Hey Karen; You are in my prayers - all of you. This is tough time. So glad that he has you - let him know that he is in my prayers. Much better to know what he is working with for his future. My husband just had three stints put into his heart - and they told me he was 'young' to have it done (he's 59). Medical science is a continuing growing science - maybe this is a new avenue for him. There are tons of possibliies. Please keep me posted - my angel blessings, Susan

I've heard of the beach, Marie - but haven't yet visited it. I've read the view from the top of the bluff is spectacular. I've always been curious about geo-caching, and suspect I could get into it. Sounds like a great way to spice up hikes, and since I'm a bit of a gadget and puzzle geek myself (with a portable GPS), it sounds like fun. Thanks for including the link; I didn't realize that puzzle-solving was part of the geo-caching thing. I have been to Cape Alava and the petroglyphs you refer to; it is a very cool hike I did with my boys nearly ten years ago. There is a great campground (16 primitive sites on Lake Ozette) at the trailhead of a triangular trail that includes the Lake Ozette trailhead, Cape Alava and Sand Point. It's a total of nine miles (quite flat), with a lot of it on cedar boardwalk, which is pretty cool. The three mile beach leg, that includes the petroglyphs is quite a workout, since that section of beach is all small to medium sized loose rock that gives with every step. The campground is a good base from which to go to Cape Flattery and Shi Shi, also. There is a place on base at Bangor where your daughter can rent all the camping gear you'd need for several days, also (pretty cheap, too). If you had the right vehicle, you could even rent a trailer, small boat and outboard motor to explore Lake Ozette there. There is a boat launch at the campground. A fantastic day trip from Bremerton is also the Staircase Rapids (in part of Olympic Natl. Park), on the Skokomish river above the west side of Hood Canal. It's only 3 miles total (in and back) through old-growth forest along a truly spectacular section of the river, that is an epic taste of the best of the Northwest

Hi Marie,
I'm also curious about the beach you've heard about. I try to get out to the coast for some hiking every summer, and my favorite is Shi Shi. It takes about 3.5 hrs to get there, so it's best to plan to stay overnight in that area, but it is a place that will blow your mind, it is so wild and beautiful. It is just over a three mile hike (easy hike, but some muddy stretches) from the trailhead, but it is a place you would never forget. During the week in the summer, it is usually empty, so you can really appreciate the wildness of the place. Another great spot in that area that is only a 3/4 mile hike (not muddy) is the overlook at Cape Flattery, the NW point of the contiguous 48. The museum on the Makah reservation is interesting also, unless you have serious issues with Native American whaling. The link below has a photo gallery with a number of good photos of Shi Shi. Google Earth has good photos also, if you're familiar with the program. I can't vouch for the resort that the website is associated with - it is new since the last time I visited.

Karen,
I am so sorry that your son won't be able to fulfill his dreams in the Navy. That must be hard for him. I am glad to hear that his medical condition is manageable. How soon until he will back home?

Karen--- I know it is tough to see a bright side... thank goodness they discovered this before Damien was deployed on a sub to the far reaches of the world. Who knows what care he would have received? Or how his health would have been impacted! I am so relieved that he will be able to return home safetly. I am sure his heart is broken and he is frustrated beyond words. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers!

WHAT!!! STUCK in Washington! That is how I felt when I moved away from the northwest for college. Couldn't wait to get home! Give her some time.
Our winters full of gray clouds with wind and rain get everyone a little blue. Add in being away from home and family and friends can really tip the scales. Wait until she experiences our summer with warm days and cool nights. Lots of places to hike and camp or shop and eat! She won't want to leave.
Good thing about the navy is there are lots of guys and gals that are away from 'home' and they tend to make friends pretty easily. Keep that supportive 'you can do it' attitude when talking to your daughter. That makes all the difference.
If she wants to get away to a 'home' environment let her know we are here for her! She is welcome in our home anytime!
