Great tip Laura (about the address thing).

Just heard from my friend at RTC: This PIR group will graduate in Navy Blues. The final group to grad in Dress Whites is the 10/1 group. They go back to Dress Whites in the spring. All recruits buy both uniforms. No matter which set your recruits wear, their portraits are always taken in the Navy Blues.

Here is the link to the questionnaire discussion in this group. These are great to print out and send to your recruit. They answer the questions and send it back. Quick and easy for them, and we get all the info we are waiting to hear.

PksMom, you made me LOL at what you said about the RDC standing over them while writing. It's funny because I thought the same exact thing! My husband's little note at the end of the form letter was "suspiciously" upbeat, but in the end I was very relieved by what he wrote.

dans_mom, thanks for your kind words. I've been preparing for this time period since the middle of last year. I was sure that I would be bawling my eyes out everyday, but I am actually holding up really well. I don't know if I will say the same thing once a few weeks of this has passed, but so far so good!

Oh, one more thing about A-School. Some will stay in Great Lakes, but they won't be where they are now (at RTC), they will be at the big base across the street. If your recruit tells you that they are a Grad & Go, but you know their A-School is at Great Lakes - you are in for a very special treat! Those are the ONLY ones who get overnight liberty with family/friends over PIR weekend!! A Grad & Go means they leave boot camp before PIR weekend is over (either fly out or move across the street). Those who are not G&G, move or fly out Monday or later that next week.

PKsMom & MaribethP - Yep, A-School is the next step, where they all get their training (schooling) in whatever rate they will be. A rate is another name for the job they will hold. Some are only in A-school for a few weeks, some a few months, others up to two years. I suggest finding the group on this site that relates to the rate your loved one will be in, and also join the group for that A-School. Example: My son is an IT (Information System Technician - computer geek), so I joined IT Moms and also the A-School he was going to, Pensacola/Corry Station. I was able to ask those moms a lot of questions before my son even left boot camp.

Glad some of you have received your form letters, I know the first letter you get will be even more exciting! It's funny how my son kept repeating in several letters "please be safe, I need you guys to be there when I get out of this place". It's like he thought something was going to happen to us. My favorite line was when he was complaining about all the IT (Intense Training) they had to do because a few of the guys messed up (if one messes up, the whole division pays for it). He said, "while doing an hour of IT, I let my mind wonder and I see myself in our house, staring at dad in his chair, you on the computer and I am just walking from room to room - it's like I'm there with you". It freaked me out when I first read it!! But that's what he did to keep the pressure off and mentally get out of that place.

Update: My son finished his last class on Tues, he graduated from A-School this past Friday and he should be home for 10 days leave sometime after 8/30. I cannot wait to see him!!!! He was a Grad & Go, so we got less than 16 hrs with him on PIR weekend. Graduation from A-School is not the big production that graduation from boot camp is. He didn't even tell me when it was going to be (and we talk or text daily). He said there were about 8 families there, but that's because they only lived a few hours away.

Finally got the form letter on Thursday (yes, 08/18/10) but that is the day I left for 4 days. How hard that was to talk to my husband on Thursday night, know the letter was there (he read it to me) and not be able to drop my letters in the mail. I had tried to call his recruiter for two days before I left to at least try and get his address but was told it "wasn't posted yet". I've been home about an hour and have everything ready to go tomorrow, I just hate that it had to wait. Now to wait for the real letter or phone call.

Evening, moms! I think we're all waiting for our first 'real' letter! Although I do keep rereading the few sentences he wrote on the form letter, keeps me going!

navymomVicki, how nice for you that your son was still positive when he spoke to you! Mine sounded so wiped out when he called, but his 'form letter' was more upbeat, if you can call it that, at least it was reassuring. Of course in my active imagination, I imagine the RDC standing over them yelling, 'Write positive things so your mothers stay off my back!!!" LOL

MaribethP, I think "A" school just means whereever they end up after basic training is over; that could be many places, I believe, including sub school. But then I may be completely wrong! Hopefully Angie or Sobe or one of the 'experienced' moms can correct me if I am. :)

lotts mom-I know how you feel, just 'checking' off the things helps pass the week; first the box then the form letter, then hopefully a real letter soon....or even a phone call (in a few weeks I'll bet.)

Our son Cole is in Div 337 Ship 10. It's not the same of around the house but we know he is going to do great! The funny thing about him is his last call to us, he still had his sense of humorand positive attitude. We cant wait to get a letter from him this week, well at least we hope he writes us. But we will look forward to seeing our son in October!

My son's PIR date is 10/08 and I was wondering if anyone else out there has a child going to sub school in Connecticut. I see a lot of postings for the A school but no one has really said anything abut the sub school. Just wondering!!

I, too, am looking for my first "official" letter from my son! I am hoping maybe this week! Hopefully they had time today to write to loved ones!!!

i recieved her box and i was really upset..the only thing not in there was her..and i miss her but i loved seeing her handwriting and for some reason this strange calm came over me ..i know she ok but i cant wait to get a real letter or a real phone call
