It's Friday evening, and a year ago I would have been sitting in the stands watching my son play football. Tonight, I am cooking dinner (grilled fish and baked sweet potatoes - in training for PIR..lol) and relaxing around the house. I just grabbed my favorite sweatshirt and some comfy pants. Now, this sweatshirt is so thin you can nearly see through it. I have had it for 22 years, I sort of borrowed it from my nephew and it never found it's way home to him. He was an engineer in a nuke in the NAVY. It's navy blue with a white NAVY logo on it. When I am not feeling well, a little sad, or whatever - I grab this sweatshirt. Tonight it has new meaning for me, as it is the first time I have worn it since my son left 11 days ago for BC. Can you believe I have been wearing this sweatshirt 22 years, and he is 19! Who does that, who has clothes older than their (nearly) adult children. I was remembering when he enlisted this last April, and said he joined because it was time someone got me a new sweatshirt. A little teary eyed, and wearing my Navy sweatshirt!

MominPA - very excited for you! What a wonderful young man you have there that would want to make sure he brought a huge smile to his Momma's face! Thanks for sharing.

FYI: KeKe's mom posted a press release yesterday, which is wonderful, and has the exact wording too - however I was asked by someone in the Public Affairs office at RTC to tell all of you that the recruits do get the opportunity to fill out a Fleet Hometown News release form that gets sent to the local papers in their zip codes. Parents do not need to send info to the paper, unless they want to send a photo, because the Navy already is sending the info to the papers. My son's press release was published about 10 days after he graduated. Had I known this, I would of dropped off his Navy portrait right after PIR and asked them to publish it with the article once it arrived. So, the bottom line is, you don't have to worry about giving your newspaper a press release, RTC takes care of that, but if you want his/her picture to be next to the article, you will need to get that to your local paper right after graduation!

dans mom and MOMinPa, sending hopeful thoughts that the letter comes for you today! Got mine on Monday and it made my day, I even kissed the part he wrote! (My daughter rolled her eyes, but she's used to her mother doing weird things, LOL)

Laura, thanks for checking in! I actually joyfully opened the box, I am sure that knowing ahead of time it was coming helped; I was hoping for a note, or something but nothing excepts clothes, shoes and his cell phone.

kekes mom, what a great idea! I'm going to cut/paste this and save it for "later". Thanks for sharing.

I think we'll be getting more 10/8 members within the next few days once more letters come from this week's "shippers".

Hi ladies, just popping in to share a little something I did for my new Sailor. Our town publishes a weekly newspaper and they put announcements on the front page. I sent in the following Press Release along with a photo of my son. Thought I'd save you all a lot of time trying to find an "Official" press release since our recruiter knew nothing about it. I did some research and found this:

Press Release

Navy (Rank) (First Name) (Last Name), son of (Parent's name) and (Parent's name) of (City), (State), recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL.

During the eight-week program, (Sailor's Last Name) completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations." This exercise gives recruits the key skills and confidence they need to graduate and take to the Fleet. "Battle Stations" has been designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly 'Navy' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

(Sailor's Last Name) is a (Year) graduate of (School) of (City), (State).

dan's mom - where is he going for A-School?

I really recommend clicking on this link: Grad & Go Info it will answer quite a few questions, because their are different scenarios. I can help you on that site with any questions you have after reading the "intro" stuff. I would end up writing a book here, so better to go there!

Laura - I think I lucked out when my son's box came, I was actually between flights and sitting in the O'Hare airport when my husband called to say it arrived! Then he called the recruiter to get the address and gave it to me. I mailed the letters I had written to date right there at the airport! I also missed his 3rd week call a few weeks later (I was on another flight!!!). And no... I'm not a pilot or flight attendant, but I travel for business. But I did tell my husband not to wash his shirt or jacket - I wanted to be able to smell him again when I got home. I threw the socks away - those were not worth smelling or even saving!!!!
