Laura - you are not kidding! I am naturally a loud person, Italian blood runs thick in my veins, but I'm also very petite - so most people who look at me can't imagine that much noise coming from so small a frame! So when I shouted "you know what", EVERYONE turned around. And I'm not one who cusses casually either, so my husband new something was wrong (and he's the dip who left the pictures at the coffee stand!).

Cool Stuff to know:

E-1 = SR, Seaman Recruit
E-2 = SA, Seaman Apprentice
E-3 = SN, Seaman
E-4 = 3, Petty Officer Third Class
E-5 = 2, Petty Officer Second Class
E-6 = 1, Petty Officer First Class
E-7 = C, Chief Petty Officer
E-8 = CS, Senior Chief Petty Officer
E-9 = CM, Master Chief Petty Officer

Paygrades E1 through E3 can also have a rating abbreviation preceding their paygrade symbol IF they are graduates of Class "A" schools.
Once they finish A-School, they will be addressed by their rate first, then their paygrade. Using the example of a Sailor who has finished school and is now an IT (Information System Technician), it would read as follows:

E-1, ITSR

E-2, ITSA

E-3, ITSN

E-4, IT3

E-5, IT2

E-6, IT1

and so on..

Bleh, no letter from him. Just junk mail. Maribeth and OhioNavyMama, thanks for the encouraging wishes! I think I'm going to start hoping for something by next Thurs/Friday and if anything comes before then, then it will be a nice surprise.

Karen1913, LOL at your mailman moving out of your way!

Lala - so happy for you that you get to see your daughter!!

I hope lots of you receive letters today. I'm still not holding out hope since my SR just left on 8/17, but you never know.

FYI: There are many sailors who have their Navy portraits shipped home if their family is not coming to PIR. Our son was a Grad & Go, so he ran back to his barracks after PIR to get them for us.

TIP: We almost LOST them at the airport on our flight home. It's a very large flat white package (like a plain flat FedEx envelope) and it wouldn't fit in our carry-on bag (did not bring checked luggage). While grabbing a coffee in the terminal, we set it down and walked away. You should of seen me jump - I screamed "Oh Sh#@" and everyone turned around. I ran back to that stand and there it was! The envelope is white and blended with the wall. I'm lucky airport security didn't apprehend it thinking it was something dangerous! So, I did something rather smart for a change and wrote our name, cell & home phone numbers on the envelope - and wrote "Navy Portraits" on it too! If I lost it again, maybe someone would call me.

Good morning moms! I thought I would stop by before I get ready for my weekend camping trip and loooonnnngggg wait for the mail, lol. Have to wait till 3:30 ish west coast time. It better come today or my husband will NOT like the way I am this weekend, :) He gets home around that time and I told him we are not leaving till it gets here!
Lala, I am so happy you get to see your daughter! When you do, give her an extra hug for all of us moms who are waiting to hug our kids!
Comment by Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons on August 27, 2010 at 12:17pm
I can't wait to see her, I can't stop crying now. Man I really miss her so much. The phone is good, but I just need to see her and hold her. We dropped her off at the base on Friday and gave her a hug and said we will see you at the airport in the morning. We still had so much to talk about and didn't really say goodbye because we thought we would see her the next morning. We did not know that being on a chartered flight meant we wouldn't get to meet her at the airport. We left heartbroken and crying just like lots of other families and that was over a month ago. So as you can see I am very excited that i will finally get to spend a few days with her. :)
