Darcie, if you are married I believe you will be able to since his A-school is so long. If you aren't married I don't think that will happen.

Hey DarcieR.

I'm not sure if it's different than it was when my husband was joining the Navy Reserves and after he finished Basic, I was able to live on base with him in Meridian Mississippi, and his school was only about 10 weeks.  It took a lot of asking, but eventually they let him bring me on base to live in temporary housing...maybe because they had room available.  That was over 20 years ago, so who knows these days.  It doesn't hurt to ask and keep asking.  We were young married students, no kids at the time, so it was easy for me to be mobile along with him.  We went back to college when he was done with the A school.

Alright, thank you! :) Oh.. and is there anyway to get moved with your SR to a-school? I have gotten a lot of no's and yes's.. So, confused. :( He is going to Groton and will be there for 6m-1yr, pretty sure a year.

I am so happy I am actually going to get to mail my son a letter today! I have an address and a date for PIR. I am once again a happy mom. Funny it doesn't take much to change my spirits these days. I still think this week leading up to Christmas is going to be tough but I feel like I can at least ready myself for PIR now. I booked Navy lodge. plane ticket and rental car. SO now it is write letters, encourage the heck out of my son and look forward to giving him a huge hug as a Sailor in February. Hoping the weather will be good for us all. Big party in Great Lakes come February 10th.

No question here is silly, Darcie!  We recommend that you all leave on Sunday, if possible, just in case their travel arrangements change.  That happens sometimes.  I'm assuming yours is flying out for A School?  If so, you want as much time as possible with your sailor at the airport on Saturday as they wait for their flight.  Now...if your sailor is going to GL A School, for sure stay until Sunday night as you should have daytime liberty with your sailor through the weekend.

As far as arriving...up to you.  The MeetNGreets start at 5pm  and 6 pm.  So if you want to arrive earlier in the day, that is fine.  Really no need to be there on Wed night unless you just want to be.  You won't see your sailors until PIR no matter what!

Got my letter and I cried- there was a note on back- it was dated a week ago

Would you recommend getting in on Wednesday or Thursday for PIR? Since there are the meet and etc.. and for when leaving sat or sun? Sorry for the silly question.

Comment by diannep on December 19, 2011 at 4:02pm

bepooh:  Lala (N4Moms veteran) stayed at Navy Lodge and said it was good.  Close to the base...no shuttle but you can drive or take a cab to PIR.  Also, they give you a pass to shop at one of the smaller NEXs without your sailor having to be present (your sailor has to be with you at the other NEXs).
