just had a funny flashback--(maybe this will lift our spirits) We were waiting in the Chicago train station to go back to Great Lakes. My son said, "Mom, where's the head?" I said "What?" He said "Oh gee, I still think I am back at base, I meant where is the restroom?" :)
Another nice reflection . . . he went way out of his way to open doors for EVERYONE where ever we went in Chicago. I am thinking they stressed proper manners for when they left base. He also addressed people with "sir" or "mam"---so very lovely to hear! I hope they all keep that up.
makes 100% sense...we just didn't get enough time with them. :(
yes, Oceans,I have been up and down too. I am greatly relieved that boot camp is over for my son but just now realizing a new level of challenges await him. I did not realize how much I missed him until I saw him at PIR! Does that make sense?
anyone else feeling a little down today. Back home and in regular routine, but missing my daughter all the more. It is so much better now that we can talk to them, but the realization has hit that it will be a very long time before I see her again. This past weekend was amazing an experience that none of us will ever forget. So proud of each and every sailor who graduated this past weekend.
Thanks for letting me know! We were really concerned about her!!
Glad to get to meet some of you this past weekend, wishing that we could have met you all, but there was so little time! It was a great weekend and well worth the wait! Were they not amazing???? Now everyone is back to the normal routine, but still missing our Seaman (no longer SR). Does anyone know how the young lady is that passed out.....I am thinking she was in Div 063, but not sure? She was a division flag carrier and hit the floor pretty hard....felt really bad for her and her family!!!
Thanks, rivermom. We loved Residence Inn too and also arrived by shuttle (first one). It was great!
thanks, lorimc. You are talking about RTC, right? Yes, only those with gate passes can drive and park by the NEX on PIR day when returning sailors (we did that too) Without gate pass, they have to be dropped off at the front gate.
Thanks for the info, megsmom, about GL A School base.
Just want to add my congratulations to all the new Sailors and their families. We had a splendid time celebrating PIR with our son in Chicago. He really wanted "to get out of Dodge" to experience his first liberty. It was great. We took the Metra into downtown, ate at a great restaurant overlooking Michigan Ave.---walked around a bit and got back in plenty of time.
Oh yes, and the PIR ceremony was fantastic. What an inspiration to see how perfectly regimented everything was. And the Navy staff was great. We had five "extra" people and they all got in when we did--we were there at 6:30am. Stayed at Residence Inn and took the shuttle to the base. Easy breezy. The train station (for Chicago) was right across the street. Residence Inn's guest van picked us up and took us back that evening.
Thank you again for all your help veteran Navy Moms. I cannot think of any info. you gave that was not spot on!
I want to give a big shout out to Sarge. I highly recommend his meet and greet for very valuable information. We came a little late and he spent additional time with us. He is a remarkable and very unselfish man. I hope Great Lakes has given him some sort of recognition. He really deserves it.
We are so grateful for this experience and for the Navy preparing our son for his next level at Nuke School. He too came out a shining star and we are so very proud of him. God Bless America and God Bless the Navy!
P.S. Went to O'Hare airport to see him off. Lots of parents were there at 4 am! --met some of the other "Nuke" sailors--nice guys & gals. They all looked so handsome in their dress uniforms--everyone stared at them--in awe!
