Amy:  Great idea!  Because I wouldn't have missed PIR for the world!  We only had one day with our sailor...and the whole experience was amazing!  Didn't know about the airport visits when we went 2 yrs ago  :-(.  So...I say...for those who can swing it...please go to PIR!  I can promise you...you will not regret it.  It is amazing...and a lifetime memory.  I would also get the PIR DVD.  It was the only time I saw my sailor during the ceremony (couldn't spot him when there).  But it is not the same as being there.

The fact that most of the sailors leave during the weekend has been going on for a while.  I know someone posted that question to RTC FB about 4-5 months ago, and that was their answer then.

Oh my gosh, PatricksMom:  So sorry about your mother in law...and then to have this news about your SR.  But don't worry...my son was asmoed also when he was there...for a week.  PIR will be just as exciting for you and your son...even more so since they were delayed and had to work harder.  I know the "not knowing" why is hard right now...but he'll get there.  I would think that he is physically ok since if they are in RCU, they normally don't give them a new PIR date yet.  I know the feeling about your heart breaking for him.  But just know that when he gets with another division, he will bond with them too.  My son said that when he joined his new division with a few others coming off of being asmoed, the ones already there were a bit "stand offish" at first as far as accepting them, but came to embrace them.  His good friends to this day are from that 2nd division.  So know that he will make more good buddies!  Prayer...what would we do without that???  Prayers for all of you in this most difficult time ....

but your son is going to be fine!  :-)

Well, it looks as if I'm joining your group ladies.  My son was supposed to PIR 1/27, but we received a voicemail on Friday (while we were in California for my husband's mom's funeral), that he's been set back two weeks.  We just returned home late last night, and I got the vmail this morning.  We know nothing other than that, and the not knowing is terrible.  I'm just praying he's physically okay.  I'm sure no matter what the reason, he must be so disappointed not to be graduating with the SR's he's trained with since he's been there.  My heart is just breaking for him, and while I can do nothing to help him at the moment, I can lift him in prayer.  Very thankful to be able to do that.

We're also going, no matter what.  My daughter won't be staying in GL but we'll do whatever we can/have to to see her before she leaves for school.  We're taking this opportunity to spend a little time in the Chicago area before graduation.  An 'early Spring Break' so to speak.  Not flying back home until Sunday.

:( Thanks Arwen, good info.. Hah, still going no matter what. :) Would love to also see him during a-school.. but still trying to get myself moved up there for it!

I just learned that things have COMPLETELY changed at Great Lakes. They ALL leave for their A-schools on Friday and Saturday, unless there is some circumstance that makes it difficult for them to get flights or some other issue. I’m not sure when exactly this changed, but it is fairly recent. This week is the first I have heard of it, and I’ve been working to confirm information. I now have it confirmed from two sources at Great Lakes.

Here is a post from the official Great Lakes folks on the official Great Lakes RTC Facebook page:
“Grad & Go is an obsolete term that we no longer use because it doesn’t mean anything. All recruits either depart RTC on the day of graduation if they are staying at Great Lakes, or the next day if they are going out of state. The only exception would be for those recruits who are on hold for some reason or if there is an issue with their orders or ticket availability.”

For those of you whose recruits will be attending schools at Great Lakes schools; make your plans to spend the weekend there. Your recruits will transfer to their schools on Friday, then get a weekend of liberty, like always.
For those of you whose recruits will be going to schools in other cities, I would suggest buying a DVD of PIR and skipping Chicago entirely. When my younger son PIR’s (he’s currently working with the recruiter to enlist) goes to bootcamp, I will not be spending nearly $1,000 per person for my family for a one-day event. Instead, make plans to visit your new sailor during the next weekend (maybe a three-day weekend) at his or her school. If you do go for the PIR ceremony, get a hotel for Thursday and Friday, and fly home late Saturday. You can spend Saturday at the airport, where you may get to spend time with your recruit.

My boss hates it that I have my phone sounds constantly turned on now.. But he can kiss my a**.. He does not understand and is not willing to work with me on it.. so if I get a call I am answering it. :)
