Well, as you all can see by the phone times posted, calls can come at any time on any day! It can be stressful to have your phone "glued" to you during all of bootcamp, but much harder if you see you have missed a call, so well worth it! Be sure to take it with you when you head to the mailbox and bathroom! So many ladies have missed calls during those times in the past...the SRs usually don't get a chance to call right back in the early weeks because of so many trying to make calls....so "babysit" that phone!
They are not supposed to talk about exactly what they did in BattleStations...they sign a confidentiality agreement. But it basically is a test on all that they have learned in bootcamp, and in how to react to emergency situations when on a ship, etc. They are evaluated on teamwork...so important. Be sure to read the BattleStations discussion above for more info.
Just remember, when you get that "I'm a Sailor" call, they may sound very tired...because they are! They have been up since early morning the day before...and can't go to sleep until 8 pm that night (2 hours earlier than normal). But they are sailors...and usually eating/drinking "treats" that they have been denied until now. They also are able to buy some internet time after BattleStations and you may see them post on their FB! Be monitoring that since some will post that they are sailors before they get to make the phone call home--phones can get very busy.
Good morning, everyone!
welcome jdleapley, let us know if you have any questions at all.
My daughter also thought it was fun. She said she would even like to do Battle Stations again. She loved bootcamp and all the friends she made there. Well, at least after the first 3 weeks lol.
Once they're past those first highly stressful two or three weeks, bootcamp IS fun. I can say that from personal experience, and my son agrees. Where else do you get to go swimming, play firefighter, shoot guns, play pretend on a huge, nearly real-looking ship, and feel like a million dollars marching around in perfect sync while wearing awesome uniforms? There is a HUGE pride thing going on, especially when an established division marches by a bunch of Smurfs (newbies) who are still clueless. We didn't have Battlestations 21 when I was in the Navy, but my son says it's a lot like playing an all-nighter video game, except that they actually get wet and stinky.
I too always have my phone on and by my side. Thanks for the call times....I was just wondering, and this helps. Thanks for being here to talk to ladies! I am new to all of this so it really helps to have some other parents to talk to!
3:42 CST for me. His first call was at 12:12pm but that was 1/2 which might have been holiday schedule. I think they probably call when the PO tells them they can. I've heard of calls late at night! My phone is always on and by my side just in case.
I am so happy for those of you getting calls...I am beyond anxious to get a phone call!! My SR has been gone for a month today. I was hoping tonight would be the night for her call. Do they usually call in the evenings? Or is it just whenever?
I MISSED a call...but wanted to give the rest of you a heads up. I got a nice voice mail that I have listened to about 10 times. He said he was great, they were doing great as a division, his actual training day was 2-5. I know that his division is having to RUSH to get finished by PIR on 2/10. They have battlestations TWO days before PIR. Talk about pressure. But he said, "I'm having fun". I wanted to put that in quotes so you will believe that he actually used that word. Praise the Lord for a kid who loves a challenge, huh? So happy for those of you who got to speak to your SRs. Glad they are all well.
YAY for calls :-)
